OAKLAND -- The Oakland A's today agreed to terms with free agent designated hitter Frank Thomas. To clear a spot for Thomas on the roster, the A's placed outfielder Travis Buck on the 15-day disabled list retroactive to April 19 with shin splints. To clear a spot for Thomas on the 40-man roster, the A's transferred Eric Chavez to the 60-day DL.

Im kinda mixed on this one. It means that most likely Mike Sweeney will not be in the starting line-up nearly as often, but it does give us a much needed Power Bat. Im curius what the rest of you think about this move.

I am worried that Eric Chavez was tranferred to the 60-day DL. This must mean he is not comig along as well as we all hoped for. Has anyone heard any more info on Chavy?

Last I heard they aren't expecting Eric Chavez back from the DL until May anyway. I would much rather have him get 100% healthy before he returns than have him try to come back when he is not yet 100% and reinjure himself. The acquisition of Frank Thomas now gives the Athletics more options with their starting lineup. Mike Sweeney is now a platoon/rest guy for both Daric Barton and 1B and Frank Thomas at DH. He did ok at 1B today as we had no errors. Thomas may have gone 0-3 today, but he also had 2 walks. That's still a .400 OBP for the day, which isn't all that bad. He still has a good eye and I believe his bat will come around.

From the notes on one of the pregame articles from teh A's homepage: "A's general manager Billy Beane said third baseman Eric Chavez, who is in Arizona rehabbing his back and isn't eligible to come off the 60-day disabled list until May 28, has been hitting in the cage in Arizona but hasn't been cleared for any other baseball-related activity. Geren said Chavez is joining the team Friday in Seattle."

In short, it sounds like he is still recovering, and improving. He is no longer completely shut down from all baseball activity, but the Athletics brass are (in my opinion wisely) taking their time and being patient with his return. The last thing I want to see is them rush him back to fast, have him not fully healthy, and have that lead to worse nagging injuries. Get him to 100% and that gives you the best chance of having him stay there.
