Simple question: Who would you rather have start? Jeff Mathis or Mike Napoli? Why?

For me, right now, it's still Naps. Mathis has been hot with the bat, but I think Napoli's still a more consistent hitter and has more power potential. Also, over the last couple seasons Napoli's been better at throwing out base-stealers. I think Mathis has better tools and will surpass Naps by the end of this season, but I still give a slight edge to Naps.
Glad we have 'em both though!

Very tough. Coming into the season I woulda said Napoli by a long shot. Napoli has already shown the power he has. But Mathis started hot and has yet to cool down so maybe this is the Jeff Mathis we heard about a couple years ago.
For now i would still have to say Napoli but that could change quickly.

Ya, this one was a close call for me as well. Mathis is lighting it up, but Napoli has proved to be more consistent. Continue splitting starts, and time will tell who will emerge. Both are displaying great power early on. I believe our catching duo has combined for 7 HR's. One thing I do believe is Mathis is the better defensive catcher, more agile and faster. Definite close call, though.

Ok, nevermind my posts above. Technical difficulties. We had a router go down here as I was typing it, so I saved it in another app and now I am pasting it back in but it won't save.
Naopli just went deep again! Make that 8 dingers from the two headed catcher.
Anyone notice Mathis got two straight starts in Boston? Did Scioscia just make him the primary guy? Or is he riding the hot hand?

Haha...as soon as I wrote 7 HR's, not soon after, Napoli hit that homer. So, now it's 8. And yes, I noticed the same thing, Leedy. Jeff Mathis has had the last 2 starts before today against a difficult opponent in the Red Sox. I think he may want Mathis to be battle tested in an always sold-out, and hostile Fenway Park. It seems like there is no primary guy at the moment. It really is a dead heat.

I think Scioscia was just riding the hot hand, Leedy. Mathis had some great AB's in the first game and looked pretty good in game 2 before swinging at some stuff a foot out of the zone against the lefty Boston brought in. What a bonus to get this kind of production from our 2 catchers though....awesome!!

Good poll/post I like the fact that both of the catchers are able to call a good game behind the plate, hit for power and are still relatively young and still perfecting at their craft. Best part we have 2 good young catchers and if 1 goes down we have a strong capable backup.

Mathis...
Neither have enough MLB #'s to make a good comparison yet but Nap struck out once every 3.17 AB in his minor lg career and Mathis once every 5.23.... Mathis hits better and they are almost duplicates defensively.

I picked Mathis, but man did he miss the cuve ball by a mile in several key situations yesterday, and couldn't get a bunt down, though they almost killed him with a pitch to the head. He is very athletic for a catcher, as he is a former SS, and blocks the ball better than most catchers in the League. Overall I'm happy with the two headed catcher and real happy with Aybar at short. Starting pitching is strong despite missing John Lackey and Kelvim Escobar, and the offense is doing well even without Kendrick, due to injury, and Anderson off to a slow start, and last but not least, Casey Kotchman for President, he is doing outstanding on offensive, including power numbers, and defense as expected, this, after somebody on here tried to tell me Kendry Morales would be the first baseman this year, please. Angels all the way this year and for years to come baby.

Thanks for the feedback, on the poll, guys. Another series, another first 2 starts by Jeff Mathis. Mathis started the first 2 series against Boston, and has started the last 2 games against the Tigers. Mike Napoli is starting to look like the backup.

I like them both very much.. What a start for both of them. They should both have a starting job in the majors, however I'm very glad to have them both. I did pick mike as he calls a slightly better game, thats about it.

I couldn't vote on this poll becuase I would pick both of them.
Combined, they are the best hitting duo at the catcher position, so why mess up that formula? It is a nice combo that is working out very well for the Angels.
Both are good catchers, but neither one has been at the position long so they are fighting for the playing time. Let's keep them both going a couple games at a time becuase it is doing wonders for our team.
Great post
GO ANGELS!!!
