Don't get me wrong, the Titans are in a position that they will have someone there at 24 that will fill a need - whether that be a DT, DE, CB or WR. With that said, if DeSean Jackson is there, he would have to be the pick. Does he have the ability to be a bust? Yes and chances are he would be best suited to play in the slot most of his career, although the potential to be a receiver in the mold of a Steve Smith and Santana Moss is there.
Although this is all true, Jackson is the fastest WR in the draft and that IS what the Titans need most. His presence alone would make the Titans a better offense because teams have to compensate for speed. The Titans already have the big posession receivers.
- Teams bring their safeties up into the box to stop the run and to spy on VY - like Bob Sanders does. With no speed on the outside, they can do this and not have to worry about getting burned over the top. With DeSean Jackson, a team would have to adjust defenses and spread out a bit. This will open up the running game a little for the RB, but more importantly, it will open up running lanes for VY. The offense will totally take on a new look, and a team that doesn't compensate for his speed on defense will leave the opportunity for quite a few big plays throughout the game.
- People say Jackson will show most in the return game and that since the Titans just signed Carr. Carr is a good kick return guy, but he is not all that great at punt returns. DeSean is a great punt returner. Also, lets imagine Carr becomes the best KR in the league, which he won't, but let's pretend. He would receive the treatment that Devin Hester gets and teams will kick away from him. If you put both returners back there, one of them would get their hands on the ball everytime.
- A lot of people question whether he will be able to hold up over the course of the season. He is better suited to do so than Ted Ginn was last year and he went 9th. At 24 DeSean would be a steal based on last year's draft.
I have been pushing for Limas Sweed and he would be my number 2 choice. Over the past few months and breaking down the Titans film and what not, DeSean's speed would open up a ton more than just a passing game. I just think if he is there, DeSean Jackson has to be the pick.

I'll give you a bump on this one
any Titans fan who doubts DJax, go find a tape of that Cal vs UT game from this past season and watch him dominate
you're right, the potential for a bust does exist but it also exists with Sweed, Kelly, Thomas, anyone really...that being said, we desperately need speed on offense...Alge Crumpler provides experience, good hands, and a big body but no speed...I like your thinking Believe

I hear this comparison too and I don't think it's fair
Ginn is a good player and so is Jackson
the reason I don't think it's fair is the Titans have a much better team around DJax than the Dolphins had around Ginn. Better Oline, better QB situation, better D. Opportunity to succeed exists.

Miami should have never taken Ginn as it was just a bad pick. There's a reason that entire front office has changed. Don't get me wrong, Ginn is good but not a pick at #9. Thank god Miami didn't pick up and start Brady Quinn. His confidence would have been more shot than watching him fall to the Browns late 1st round. Jackson does look good, while I personally want Sweed if Jackson is there and Sweed isn't, you won't hear any boos from me if we take him.

While I don't disagree that Ginn was not a good pick at #9, even is Sweed is there, the whole point I was making is that Jackson's speed is more needed than Sweed's size.

not going to be a popular opinion around here Believe
I don't disagree though. It's hard to judge these WR's
Sweed has the size
Kelly has the hands
Jackson has the speed
what do we need more? I'm kinda leaning toward speed right now...

Speed is definitely what we need right now, but you know, it might not be everything. If speed is what you want Donnie Avery out of Houston is the fastest receiver in this draft. He ran a 4.32 40, and reportedly broke 4.30 at his pro day with a time of 4.28. So yeah he has blazing speed. The knock on Avery is he's a very raw route runner, but once he learns the routes and gets proper coaching I think he can be a very good receiver. Word out of Tennessee is Vince Young is obviously lobbying for Limas Sweed. Sweed is a big guy who ran a 4.50 40. This you know isn't Desean Jackson or Donnie Avery speed, but he's big and physical. Its impossible to say at this point what receiver is going to have a great career or who is going to be a bust. I agree somewhat with 'Believe' but I don't know if the front office is high on Jackson. Maybe Malcolm Kelly is the best fit, because it wasn't as if our receivers couldn't get open last year, its just they couldn't catch. Kelly has great hands, so maybe he's high on our draft boards too. However his speed is a question mark because its in the 4.6 range. Like Jerry Rice, he ran a 4.7 at the combine, so he definitely can't play right? haha. All I'm saying is speed might not be everything here, while Jackson can fly, I don't know where the Titans front office has him right now. Should be interesting come Saturday.

Agreed. Jackson is not the only player with speed, but of the players with speed, he is the most ready to play. Other than a player like Calvin Johnson, is it impossible to say you have a can't miss player. You have to look at what your team needs. Titans need speed, and not just at the WR position.

Jackson has a good chance to be a bust player that battles injuries his whole career. He reminds me of Desmond Howard a little. They could get "speed" by getting Donnie Avery and he is a better receiver later in the draft.
If you want "speed", Jarod Mayo is the fastest player at his position (LB). He runs a 4.6. Thats faster than alot of the WRs and RBs being looked at in the first round. There is no chance he will be a bust. If available, Fisher won't hesitate to get "speed" on defense and go for WR in the tird round. One of three is doable.
