I have been hearing some rumors lately that the Athletics might be interested in re-acquiring Frank Thomas . Now i don't know if there is any truth in this or just mere speculation like the Barry Bonds rumors at the beginning of the year.

If this is true then it opens up alot of questions like what are they planning to do with Mike Sweeney and Jack Cust.

Is this maybe a result of Cust's struggles this year and they don't think Sweeney can handle the DH spot alone?

I think it might be a good idea if Cust was a one hit wonder and doesn't pan out but we probable need to pull the trigger on this one quickly if we want to pick Thomas up. Anywase just curious what the rest of my fellow A's fans thought about this.

I doubt it.  The A's are not a take a walk then hit a home run type of team anymore.  While they could use a big bat, as evidenced by their power outage.  I think Mike Sweeney is better on the field and in the clubhouse for this young team.

I agree with you there and if they do go after Thomas i think it would be Jack Cust being sent down and not Mike Sweeney, becuase of how valuable he is to the club.

Personally, I would love to have both Thomas and M. Sweeney and what they bring to the clubhouse on this team, even if it would mean Cust gets sent down.

However, I believe the A's will choose to keep Cust since he provides them with a left-handed DH. Also, since neither Thomas nor M. Sweeney are outfielders, that would create defensive problems for the A's... how many times would they both be able to be in the lineup without sacrificing some D (which we seemingly are already not very strong with). Also, putting one of those guys on the field would add the risk of them getting injured.

No matter how much I'd like it to happen, I don't see Big Hurt joining us unless M. Sweeney goes down for a lengthy period of time, and hopefully that won't occur.

I did a google search for some A's news and ran across this from ESPN

Frank Thomas finished fourth in the MVP balloting with the Oakland Athletics two seasons ago, and sources say the Athletics were in discussions with Thomas' agents Wednesday, three days after he was cut by the Toronto Blue Jays.

Thomas, who turns 40 next month, was hitting .167 with 13 strikeouts in 60 at-bats for the Blue Jays, following a spring training in which talent evaluators with other teams wondered if Thomas's bat speed had slowed to the point of no return. Thomas got off to a poor start for the Athletics two seasons ago, hitting .190 in April and .268 in May before effectively carrying the Athletics for the last four months of the season and finishing the year with 39 homers and 114 RBIs.

The Athletics are tied for first place in the AL West in a year in which they are developing young players like Chris Denorfia, Daric Barton, Travis Buck and Ryan Sweeney, and it's unlikely that they would sign Thomas if they thought he would infringe on the playing time of the youngest generation of Oakland players. But the decision on Thomas might come down to a simple evaluation of whether the Athletics are better off keeping Thomas instead of veteran hitter Mike Sweeney -- power vs. average.

Sweeney, 34, is hitting .288, with six walks and just one strikeout in 52 at-bats; rival talent evaluators say they don't think Sweeney will ever hit for the same kind of power he had with the Royals, and so far this year, his extra-base output is three doubles. Thomas might hit for a lower batting average, while drawing more walks and will strike out more, and he probably represent a greater home-run threat at this stage than Sweeney.

Oakland's roster is stacked with a lot of left-handed hitters -- Jack Cust, Barton, Buck, Sweeney, etc. -- and the Athletics have seen a lot of left-handed pitching so far, mustering just three homers in 248 at-bats, with a .242 average. If the Athletics choose to sign Thomas, it might be to give Oakland a greater power threat against lefties: Thomas hit nine homers in 144 plate appearances against lefties last year, and had nine homers and 31 walks in 140 plate appearances against lefties in 2006.

The Athletics tried to re-sign Thomas after the 2006 season but lost him to the Blue Jays, who are on the hook for virutally all of Thomas' salary this year after dumping him. Any team that picked up Thomas would only have to pay him the prorated minimum salary.

Has anyone heard when Big Frank might be getting back in the lineup? I know they have been playing well without him but to keep pace with the Halos I think they will need his bat and just the imposing force he creates in the 4 spot.

This article is the latest I've heard about Frank Thomas' return. The team report on the Athletics page here says he has been instructed not to do any baseball related activities until after July 1st. His injury report says he isn't expected back until late July at the earliest.

I definitely agree that, although we are still competing, his bat would make a big difference in our lineup. He is a huge presence in the lineup even when he isn't hitting well, but with us this year he was batting .319 with a .417 OBP and a .516 SLG. and was just beginning to find his power stroke. He had an OPS of .933 while with us this year. That's not too shabby for a 40 year old DH who we are only paying the league minimum salary. I hope we see him return and remain healthy for the rest of the season. It could set us up nicely for a good second half run. The last time he was with us was the first time in a long time that we had made the ALCS as well. I'd love to see him return and play a big part in getting us to the post season and hopefully getting us a championship and himself a ring.

I couldn't agree more with you Isaiah. It really hurt our offense when Mike Sweeney and Frank Thomas went down around the same time. We really do need that big Bat in the middle again. Hopefully the Big Hurt will be able to come back at the end of July.

Any have word on Sweeney. Does it look like he can come back this year? As much as i think Daric Barton is the future when it comes time to make a run at the playoffs i think that this year we would be better
