Ok, make a case for what you think is the best rivalry in college baseball.

I'll start:

I truly believe nothing is more heated and there is no more hatred between teams than Miami/Florida State. These teams, up until three years ago, would play a minimum of 6 times per year, and some years more (see: 1999 when they played in the National Championship game as well). Throw in the fact that the two teams are often top 5 teams year in and year out, and the on the field action is heated.

But off the field, these teams really don't like eachother. Accusations of cheating have been bountied about. The coaches, when they actually do greet eachother, do so briefly and with much chagrin. The players have extreme animosity towards the others, as do the fans.

The latest twist in this rivalry was Miami taking 2 of 3 from FSU in Tallahassee when it was a 1 vs. 2 showdown. After game 3, both sides were very emotional and after Miami celebrated, they went to greet FSU with handshakes, but FSU didn't come out and jawing and taunting started, at which point FSU came storming on the field. Nothing more happened, but it was heated and to me epitomized college baseball's best rivalry. (For the record, I had no problem with Miami's or FSU's actions at the end of the game, it was just high amounts of testosterone and emotion, as Mike Martin pointed out).

So what rivalry are you taking?

HUrricanBrian,

I don't think there's really an argument against FSU-Miami being the premiere college baseball rivalry.

Sure, there are other big baseball schools like Texas, LSU, Long Beach & Stanford, to name just a few.  But there are no others  who play each other as many times a year who have such a bitter hatred for each other to along with being elite programs.

This isn't just a bitter and angry rivalry, though.  It's a lot of fun and usually features the most pro prospects you'll see on the field together at one time until you get to Omaha.

I remember sitting in the right field bleachers of The Light back in the early 90's and talking so much trash to the FSU Right Fielder that Mike Martin actually pulled a defensive switch and moved him to Center Field.  The new Right Fielder had fun with us and seemed to be enjoying himself.

And that was definitely sweet to take 2 of 3 in Tally this weekend!!!  Go Canes!

FSU and Miami...Now only if they played their series on ESPN like that annoying MLB rivalry that I used to love and now hate because EVERY GAME IS ON NATIONAL TV!

Sorry...A little off subject...I was very disappointed that the travel rule ruined the game yesterday...I would have really liked to see that game go 9 innings!

The UM/FSU rivalry may be the best, but when I was at LSU, the rivalry with Tulane was pretty heated, and has only intensified over the past 5 years.  They just played their 292nd game with eachother, going back to 1893--that's a ton of ball games.  Now days, I think it's been intensified by the smaller private school taking advantage of the larger, more storied state program in what seems to be a chronic rebuilding mode.  And the Green Wave players certainly have been happy to point out the change.  Maybe a little of David making fun of Goliath.  I expect things to revert to normal over the next few years, but its been a fun rivalry to watch.

Arizona vs ASU would have to be in the top three. Usually both teams are strong and who can forget 1976 when ASU beat UA seven straight times only to lose one time to them in the elimination game of the cws. UA then beat Eastern Michigan for the title.

nothing compares to the FSU/UM rivalery your talking about 2 elite programs that play each other alot(but i would love to see  more) with both teams being filled with players recruited by both teams and sometimes high school teammates and rivals on oppossing benches and not to mention just in general theres bad blood between the schools. This weekends seris just made it better and i cant wait for the ACC title rematch and the season finale when we play in Omaha
GO FSU

No doubt FSU-UM baseball benefits from football rivalry as well.

ok. being a die hard alabama fan i cant say the alabama auburn rivalry is that intense in baseball. sure its still a rivalry but its not incredible. speaking of that thats who bama has this weekend as they lost to them by a run tonight. but i always see the miami and fsu games on t.v every year, and i would have to agree with yall it is a very heated rivalry, with very high emotions and always alot to play for with the two teams being omaha contenders year in and year out.

UA vs. ASU instantly came to my mind too.  While I agree that FSU vs. Miami probably engenders the greatest amount of acrimony from players and fans, I think the overall level of play is higher in the Pac-10.  Plus there's the fact that FSU and Miami have only played in the same conference for 15 years.  UA & ASU have played in the same conference since 1931 in the Border Conference, then the WAC, and the Pac-10 since 1978.

PAC 10overall level of play ? Ummmmmmm, UM, FSU and UNC are 1,2 & 3 in the nation ? Clemson has been a good baseball team, so has GT. Just a few year's back the SEC was sending LSU, UF and others. I think the PAC 10 has had very good teams and seasons, but there are seasons that others simply are better. There was also Texas, Rice, Oklahoma State. The best PAC 10 recently, Oregon State. But Cal State Fullerton and a few of the non-PAC 10 teams have been the best of the West from my recollections ?

Here's the polls:

To me, baseball is similar to hoops, the smaller schools can put a bunch of top 20 teams into the tournament, get deeper into it (even have a much better shot at winning the CWS).

Just to let you know a couple things on Miami/FSU -- They have only been in the same conference for 3 or 4 years, Miami was indedependent until very recently.

Also, Miami's joining the ACC has actually hurt the rivalry. Miami and FSU used to play an annual home-and-home series in back-to-back weekends, 6 games a year guaran
