cano will be fine. I am glad we didnt trade for santana. Hank and Cashman are trying to change the philosophy of the Yankees, which was trading yound prospects or young but promising players for older guys who had already proven themselves. If we would have traded for santana it would have been a great deal for the short term. But with 3 guys who could become santana-like we are ready for the future.

The Twins are also the team that outright waived David Ortiz. Not so good on the player evaluation there.

Phil Hughes is definitely having problems with his mechanics, but he's only 21, he'll iron them out. How many first round draft picks have had problems for several years before they came into their own? Many. How many young pitchers have frustrated their organizations and their fans? Many. I know it's difficult to be patient, but it's only the 3rd week. It's definitely too early to write anyone off, especially players who've shown that they do have what it takes like Robinson Cano and Hughes.
Nobody's saying Cano is better than Ian Kinsler, Brian Roberts, Brandon Phillips and Chase Utley who are all standouts at 2nd base. You've only named 4 though, so in essence, that puts Cano in the top 5 which is still pretty good. Kinsler, Phillips and Utley are all 5 tool players while Cano isn't too much of a stolen base threat. He does have more power than Roberts though. He's also very good defensively. I can't speak for everyone else, but my argument about Cano is based on his position. After the 4 players you mentioned, Stick, there's a huge dropoff at 2nd base where defense, offense and consistency are concerned. I look at the list of major league 2nd baseman, and it's not that great. Sure, you have your decent players, but none that are going to consistently hit .300, drive in close to 100 runs, hit 20 + homers and play solid defense like Cano who let's not forget is only 25.
Anyway, all of this is a moot point, in my opinion, since it's only the 3rd week, like I said. You can't trash a player so soon, especially one that's proven his talent. I said this in another thread. Ballplayers are like stock. They might not perform well right away, but that doesn't mean you panic and drop them. You have to ride the wave a little while. Look at Cano's start last year, and look where he ended up. Enough said.

Well said yankeechick
The easiest way to say how good most of baseball thinks Cano is that notorious Yankee hater Joe Morgan loves him.

If Robinson Cano were a stock, then he'd be ENRON right about now. You know ENRON was Barron's choice for Company of the Year, only a year or two before the blowup. Sounds familiar to me.
I'm just kidding about Cano stinking of course; but I stand by my off season plea, that he wasn't worth anything close to Johan Santana. And by the way, he's not being paid chump change anymore. He's costing a lot of money for that sub .120 batting average.
Here's an idea Yankee brass... how about for once, we get a pitching coach on the NY Yankees, who actually knows how to help fix a pitchers flaws. Why couldn't the Yankees hire Leo Mazzone? Would it have killed them to hire someone who actually knows a thing or two about mechanics? Did we really owe Dave Eisland this job? C'mon. Young pitchers or not, they're still paying around $220 million for this ballclub, and Leo Mazzone is just sitting their on the unemployment line. It's like buying a real good slab of beef and having the short order cook at Denny's prepare it, instead of the Head Chef from Peter Lugars.
If Phil Hughes doesn't find his 95MPH PLUS fastball soon, I want Dave Eisland to be held accountable. This is ridiculous. How many pitchers have to come to the Yankees with fine ability or track records, and suddenly lose it at the hands of no coaching ability hacks like Stottlemeyer, Guidry and Dave Eisland? Javier Vazquez, Jose Contreras, Randy Johnson, Chris Hammond, Steve Karsay.... now Phil Hughes... the beat goes on.

I am one - and he killed my first month of fantasy baseball last year along with Ryan Howard and they are doing it again to me this year. He'll hit and it is hard to give up on a young kid who has hit .300+
Santana will have a couple nice years and Met fans will throw him on the heap shortly thereafter. But not worth the money unless you compare it to what we gave Pavano, Randy Johnson and we could go on and on.

I'll give you Chase Utley... but Brian Roberts and Ian Kinsler is no way better.
I think the Yanks are stealing a page from the NY Mets - over-rating their young pitchers.
