I got killed for suggesting that Robinson Cano should be the prime bait to nab Johan Santana from the Twins. There were so many Yankee fans treating Cano as a Hall of Fame player. How about now?
Two offers I had suggested:
1. Cano, Melkey and Ian Kennedy for Johan Santana and Pat Neshek.
Neshek could set up Rivera, allowing Joba to be a starter. Lord knows that the Yankees haven't been able to fix Phil Hughes' fastball thus far. Is there any coach in the Yankee system who has his job based on merit or his ability to fix mechanics, and isn't just a former Yankee?
2. Cano, Jeff Marquez RHP-AA, Mitch Hillegoss 3B-A for Johan Santana
We keep all three young pitchers and this Alberto Gonzalez kid could have played second and bat ninth. Gold Glove Diamondbacks 2B (and three hitter... for them), Orlando Hudson is a free agent after this year. It's easier to get a stud free agent position player than a stud free agent starter.
I KNOW THIS IS OVER, BUT IT KILLS ME THAT NO ONE WOULD GIVE IT ANY BETTER. CANO IS A NICE PLAYER... THAT'S IT. HE IS SO OVERRATED BY THE YANKEE FAITHFUL, THAT IT ISN'T FUNNY.

Cano is a young player and his numbers at the end of the season will be just fine. We are 12 games into the season and you are already going crazy. I also have Cano in fantasy baseball and I start him every week. He is also killing my team, but in the long run I trust him. He does make some random mistakes and he needs to bust his rear on the field and stop the crap.

Dude, its the first 10 games of the season, you need to chill. The baseball season is a marathon not a sprint. Cano will heat up as the weather does. The Yankees are traditionally slow starters.
Ps.
Santana is 1-2, he isn't doing that great either.

great dude, 13 games and here we go, should have traded cano....hes one of the top 2nd baseman in the game and you wanted to give him, melky and kennedy up!
thats absurd, the fact is cano is an excellent hitter who was burning hot in spring training and has hit a cold stretch...trust me, cano will win a batting title one day and he will end being a great yankee for years to come...you dont trade away cano's, hughes' or kennedy's because they have a few bad games...they all have shown excellent talent and have high ceilings. melky is a very solid player too. santana is a great pitcher but hes not amazing...will some other yankee fans actually get out of the win now theory and try and give away, 1 year for many great years to come. please dude...cano is just solid

Johan Santana has been THE BEST (not "one of") over the last five years. THAT IS A FACT! And his win-loss record is totally not indicative of how he's pitched. Matt Cain had a no hitter going in San Francisco this weekend, and the Giants bullpen eventually handed him a no decision. ERA and WHIP is what matters most. K's are nice too, because they are indicative a starter who can get himself out of a jam.
Johan's got all of that. And even conceding some homerun problems the past two years, he's still a top five pitcher by seasons end (if not THE best). Chase Utley is so much better than Cano. And it's arguable that Cano is even the best second baseman in the AL East. Brian Roberts might get that. And if you factor defense in for 50% of the grade, then Dustin Pedroia is right there with Cano.
Cano is a .306 hitter last year with less than 20 homeruns. His high run and rbi totals are more indicative of the lineup around him than anything else. I think he's a nice player. I think Cano is a good second baseman who has value.
But he's NOT worth more to a team than a left handed Franchise Starter. Cano's not going to get us out of the five game ALDS. Johan would have.
Fortunately the Mets still stink, so Johan at least won't be killing us in Boston. Johan, Wang, Pettitte, Joba.... would have been great.
PS - Melkey is a fourth outfielder who dives for routine fly balls to make it look tough. Ian Kennedy is a finesse pitcher who couldn't break a pane of glass. He's also got Scott Boras for an agent.

Cano has been solid since he joined the team. It is way to early to give up on him. If the Yankees give up on everyone who is off to a slow start they will lose half the team this year.

are you a Yankee fan?? First of the Yankees havent gotten off to fast start in April in years. Secondly Robinson Cano had a horrific first two months last yr and than no one could get him out for 3 months.. He was batting under .200 for 2 months and than was batting close to 450 for 3 months!! He will come around when the weather warms up just like the rest of the Yankees will.. Dont panic yet my fellow Yankee fan i use to be like you and be pissed off after every loss and happy after every win.. Its just not worth it ITS A MARATHON NOT A SPRINT. i rather hes hitting in october than april. The Yankees will win their share and will be there in October for a 13 straight season!! Cano will be productive once the entire team gets healthy. Hes the best offensive second baseman in the league.
Lets go by more than 2 weeks (13 games) before we start bashing Cano saying he should have been traded for Santana. Santana is one of the best pitchers in the game but he hasnt looked good and the he got rocked at home by the Brewers so i am sure he would also be 1-2 with the yankees at this pt. Hes only had one good start vs the Braves and he got out pitched by Smoltz.. i dont count the game vs the Marlins thats like facing a high school line up with no power hitter.
LETS GO YANKS TIME TO TURN IT AROUND!!! THE DRIVE FOR 27 IN 08!!!

The Florida Marlins are in first place in the NL East. Former Met Mike Jacobs is going nuts. Josh Willingham used to be compared favorably to Mike Piazza as a hitter, when he first came up as a hitter. They've also been outscoring both the Mets and Yankees.
Johan is phenomenal. The Mets are so lucky to have gotten him for that garbage package. I am a Yankee fan but I don't wear rose colored glasses. We don't have that dominating ACE, although Chien-Ming Wang has looked like one thus far.
I just don't think Cano is a future Hall of Famer as everyone seemed to think this past off season. Johan is a Hall of Fame pitcher; even if he only does 90% of what he did over the last five years.
I suppose it's water under the bridge but I think we're still going to get tossed in the ALDS, when Wang has to match-up with Beckett, Lackey, Carmona or Verlander. Good pitching beats good hitting. Almost always.
That's assuming the Yanks even make the playoffs with Phil Hughes needing MAJOR mechanical flaws corrected. Cashman's scratching his head since last summer, yet meanwhile former Yankee Mike Pagliarulo has a BLOG where scouts point out Hughes' specific mechanical issues in his delivery (see below). Why aren't the Yankees doing something about this! Ian Kennedy and Mussina are certainly no sure things either. Kei Igawa is not going to help. And Cashman still hasn't fixed the bullpen.
Copy and paste this article on Phil Hughes problems: (very good job by Pags)

Twins wanted phil, kennedy, and two others. if u add robinson, its probably minus kennedy and another minor leaguer. (twins werent so high on melky) so it would probably have to have been phil, cano, and another top prospect. i dont know how the Mets pulled that trade off, but apparently the twins really liked who they got. and right now im in no position to judge them. this is the team that stole the aforementioned johan with the rule 5 draft from houston. this is the team that got Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano for a.j. pierzinksi (im not even going to try to spell his name right, he's a giant D-bag). the twins know how to evaluate talent.
with all that said and done, Phil Hughes is 21. the youngest pitcher in the majors right now. i read that article by pags. im gonna take the word of multiple sources against his one about how phil cant throw in the 94 range. i couldnt even begin to comprehend how so many baseball people couldnt read numbers off of a radar gun. (btw phil was throwing in the mid 90's against the sox last night [nvm he had no control]) and did it ever occur to pags that phil was throwing his slider cause he couldnt get his curve over that night? phil did originally come up with a slider and Nardi taught him the curve, so its not a huge shock that Phil would feature the slider once in a while if his curve wasnt working.
and concerning robinson. he hit .264 last year with 2 homers. in april and may. he ended up with .306 avg and 19 homers. also lead all AL 2nd basemen in rbi's. robinson is warming up and its not just Yankees fans that are high on him. its pretty much everyone in baseball, from the erik karabel's to the peter gammons'. o yeh, he's also just 25.
now would i want the best pitcher in the game (whose left-handed) at the age of 28. yes. would i have probably given up those 2 minor leaguers and phil and ian. yes. but then giving 7-8 year contracts to starters are quite rarely a good idea. johan might have only gotten 6 from the mets, but i know the yanks would have had to fork over at least 7, more likely 8 years.
we're losing 75 million in salary next year. we can invest smart. and next year have 3 of our starters making less than a million dollars. i know starters are more valuable in the playoffs, but they are also more volatile and robinson plays in 160 games a year compared to johan's 35. give robinson a couple of years. he'll be easily hitting 25+ homers with 100+ rbi's and a .300 avg. especially in yankee stadium.

Robinson Cano will be fine sure he's killing my fantasy baseball but it's only 13 games in the season and he hit the game winning homerun tonight. If we traded him and he was hitting 400 right now and Santana was 1-2 everyone would call it a dumb move so wait it out man it's a long season.

BY THE WAY CANO WON THE GAME TONIGHT!!!
LOL THE Marlins R U SERIOUS THE MARLINS.. WHO CARES WHAT THEY DID IN 10 GAMES.. THEY PROJECTED TO WIN 50 GAMES THIS YEAR.. SO PLEASE AS A YANKEE fAN GET OFF THE MARLINS BANDWAGON.. THATS LIKE SAYING THE Orioles ARE A FIRST PLACE TEAM AND THE Yankees ARE A LAST PLACE TEAM BASED ON THE CURRENT STANDINGS. YANKS WILL BE IN FIRST OR BATTLING FOR A WILD CARD AND BALTIMORE WILL BE IN LAST.. STOP TALKING MARLINS CAUSE THE YANKEES ARE GOING TO SCORE 300 RUNS MORE THAN THEM!!!
JOHAN IS AN ACE BUT HES NOT OUR ACE.. THE Twins WANTED TO RAPE THE YANKEES YET THEY GAVE HIM TO THE Mets FOR PROSPECTS.. AND NOT EVEN PROSPECTS THAT ARE GUARANTEED STARS BECAUSE ALL PROSPECTS ARE HIT OR MISS.. CASHMAN IS TAKING A HUGE GAMBLE AND HIS JOB IS ON THE LINE!!! IF HUGHES AND KENNEDY DONT LIVE UP TO EXPECTATION
BTW IF U WATCHED ANY OF JOHANS STARTS HE HAS NOT THROWN A FASTBALL OVER 90 MPHS MY BROTHER IN LAW IS A DIE HARD MET FAN WE WATCHED THE ENTIRE GAME SATURDAY AND NOT ONE PITCHED WAS CLOCKED OVER 90. HE RELIES TO MUCH ON HIS BREAKING BALL AND CHANGE UP.. AND HIS MEDIOCRE FASTBALL AND DOWN THE PLATE CHANGE UP WAS FLYING OUT OF THE PARK. JOHAN WILL WIN HIS GAMES BUT HE HAS NOT BEEN LIGHTS OUT...
IM NOT A ROSE COLORED GLASSES YANKEE FAN BUT I KNOW NOT TO PANIC. U SOUND LIKE UR JUMPING SHIP AND ITS 14 GAMES INTO THE SEASON.. RELAX THEY DO THIS EVERY APRIL.. U WILL BE THE SAME FAN SAYING HOW AWESOME THEY ARE WHEN THEY GO ON A RUN LIKE THEY DID LAST YEAR TO MAKE THE PLAYOFFS REMEMBER LAST YRS RECORD IN THE SECOND HALF?? GO CHECK THAT OUT ITS VERY IMPRESSIVE... SO RELAX MY FELLOW YANKEE FAN WELL BE THERE IN THE END..
IN CASE U DIDNT NOTICE THE Tigers ARE 2-11 AND U HAVE THEM IN THE PLAYOFFS??? LOL THE TIGERS WONT BE THERE IF U BASE IT ON THEIR RECORD THE FIRST TWO WEEKS.. THINGS COULD BE WORSE.. 7-7 FOR THE YANKS IS NOT WHAT WE EXPECTED BUT IT COULD BE WORSE.. WHERE BANGED UP AND THE YOUNG GUYS HAVENT PITCHED WELL AND OUR BULLPEN STINKS BESIDES JOBA AND MO.. 1 GAME OUT OF FIRST AND SO MUCH HAS GONE WRONG.. IN CLOSING DONT SWEAT IT KID
ITS A LONG LONG LONG SEASON... IM A REALIST AND IM INSULTED U SAID I LOOK AT THINGS THRU ROSE COLORED GLASSES.. I BEEN A DIE HARD YANKEE FAN SINCE 1982 WHEN OUR BELOVED YANKEES WERE MEDIOCRE OR HORRENDOUS.. I BEEN THRU THE GOOD AND BAD TIMES.. BEEN AT THAT THE STADIUM FOR YEARS WHEN IT WAS EMPTIED NOW IT IS FULL TO CAPACITY BUT WANNABE YANKEE FANS FRONT RUNNERS AND UNREALISTIC IGNORANT FANS THAT DONT KNOW WHAT IT IS TO STICK WITH A TEAM AN ENTIRE SEASON AND THINK WINNING AND COMING IN FIRST IS THEIR BIRTHRIGHT CUZ THEIR YANKEE FANS
HAVE A GOOD NIGHT MAN... LETS GO YANKEES...
PS THE MARLINS ...LOL THE MARLINS U DEFENDING THEM IS CLASSIC... U EVER DO STAND UP.. IM SO NERVOUS THE YANKS PLAY THE BIG BAD O's soon!!! ps baltimore hasnt won a season series vs the yanks in over 10 years so dont pop a blood vessel if we dont go 18-0 vs them.. last yr they won 6 of the first 7 and we still won the season series.. thats how bad baltimore is..
