Never have I had a problem with Brendan Shanahan. In Fact his leaving and going with the Blues I would do any day of the week and twice on Sunday, that brought us the Immortal Scott Stevens.Hence cups after that. However I have officially lost respect for ''Shanny''.How does this guy with a straight face condone what Avery was doing to Marty????He claims''They cant change the rule in the middle of the season,Board of Governors Vote etc.........The Refs cant call it if its not a rule,etc.''. You know what Sean Avery did is despicable, and quite honestly if thats how the Rangers win and the Refs allow it all Ranger Fans that are true hockey fans should be embarrassed. Many ''Rules'' not written are followed by hockey players out of Respect.Everyone knows a Ref can and should call an unsportmanlike for flagging a Goalie from making a save, and quite honestly it should be,even if a Devil was doing it.Avery can talk,hit,Fight,whatever,....when it comes to those bush league tactics thats a black eye on the Stanley Cup Playoffs. Then when Brendan Shanahan a league Presence uses his weight to back up this type of play we shouldnt wonder why Hockey is so far behind in popularity and respect in this country.WHat Avery did is the same as watching pro wrestling,it devalues the game!

I agree with what the league did today. In every sport, there are unwritten rules that players follow because it is a gentleman's clause. However, a classless act like Sean Avery will find a way to do anything to break a rule or bend it so much to his advantage, as he did last night. I don't know how he wasn't called for goalie interference, because what he's doing is interfering with the goalie's ability to see the puck and make the play. If he was setting a screen or trying to establish position in the front of the net, then I would have no problem with the play. But Avery clearly was only looking to distract Brodeur and was not, in any way, contributing to the overall play and flow of the game. Also, he got a jab in on Brodeur during his little activity, and I don't know how that wasn't called.
Shanahan has to stick up for his teammate, so I understand where he's coming from eagle. No Rangers is going to step up and say that Avery was wrong for doing what he did, because they need to support him and let him know they have his back. Shanahan's comments don't surprise me or even get me angry. I would stick up for my teammate too, even if I hated his guts. I think they will probably address the issue in house, but imagine the problems it would cause if Shanahan came out and said "Avery was wrong last night, and actions like that aren't acceptable." It would be a firestorm in the New York press, and I think Shanahan handled the situation the only way he could without starting more problems (as nice as it would be for the Rangers to have to deal with distractions during the playoffs).
Let's all face it: Sean Avery has always and will always be a little punk. He's going to do everything in his power and take the rules to the limit to be an annoying asshole. I wouldn't mind seeing him get his face pounded in, and I'm very surprised Sutter didn't let Clarkson go out there and show him a thing or two. It did feel better, however, to end up winning the game. Maybe the refs will keep a closer eye on Avery in the series (I doubt it) and we'll see what happens.
As a side note, did you see Langs go after Gomez last night? These guys were teammates last year, and I think it shows the fire and hatred we haven't seen all year from the Devils against the Rangers. Let's hope that keeps up throughout the rest of the series.

I understand sticking up for a teammate, but there is a difference in sticking up for them when they are playing bush league hockey. Even Drury went up to him in the middle of the play and told him to keep his stick down. And then Shanahan comes out and says "I don't see that in the rules. If a rule change is made in the middle of the season it has to be voted on......" blah, blah, blah. Act like a veteran and a leader, don't condone a classless play. If I was the reporter, after that answer I would have come back with, "It doesn't say in the rules a player can drop his pants and take a massive dump at center ice but is it right if he does that?". F him, F Avery and F the Rangers!!!!

Vman is right Njdevilsman.....I hear that Shanny should stick up for his teammates. When a Player goes out on a limb(like Avery) and Degrades the game in a manner just because there isnt a said rule about a blatant act still makes it wrong.I agree with madden calling it''childish'' and Sutter calling it ''Bush League''.....and As I correctly called it,the league CAN call an unsportmanlike Conduct. If you also Notice Shanny has not said anything since the league ruled on this(or at least I didnt read his reaction if he has).Maybe the NHL or Renney told Shanny to shut up the same way Drury went over and said ''comon nitwit this is a playoff game leave the circus act for Ringling Bros.''

I commend guys like Drury who told Avery to quit his nonsense and play the game right, and I do think someone should have addressed the issue. I'm not trying to really defend Shanahan here, I'm just playing devil's advocate and, knowing the media circus it would create, I think he maybe did the right thing by keeping it an in house issue. We all know the play was bush league and that Avery is a jerk, but we all know Shanahan isn't going to come out and say that.

what I really want to know is , why didnt anyone put him on his butt while he was doing it ? do you think that kind of garbage would have happened before the lockout ? what really would have burnt us is if the Devils lost game 3 could you imagine the words being flung around if that scenario would have played out ?

I gotta agree with devilsfan here. We all know it was stupid for him to do it and cheap, but you gotta admit, why the hell was no one clearing the crease of the defender? That's one thing we've lacked for a couple years now...grit. It will bite us in the ass if we don't start playing with some balls, we need Vishnevsky in the game more too, seems like the only one that knows hockey is a contact and a collision sport. Get to it and we can win the next one, then who knows...to me 2-1 isnt back in it, 2-2 is. We haven't proven anything yet.

I do agree that what Avery did to Marty during Game 3 was completely foolish and more of his fellow team-mates should have told him to get lost. Shanahan should just go up to a mirror, take a good look at himself and say "Shame on you". His comments have no merit (along with Avery's actions). The rule change is fine in my book; at least you know you'll never see anyone from the Devils do something as stupid as that.
