Coach Steve Kragthorpe put his offense at an immediate disadvantage in yesterday's University of Louisville football scrimmage by placing the ball at its 1-yard line.

At least it seemed like a disadvantage. Brock Bolen rumbled 34 yards on the first play, and quarterback Hunter Cantwell hit Doug Beaumont with a 45-yard touchdown pass a few plays later. The second team then came on in the same situation and needed only one play to score -- Matt Simms' 99-yard strike to Troy Pascley.

Everybody knows the defense needs a lot of work. Fans who attended the 90-minute, 95-play open scrimmage at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium saw just how much work needs to be done

"It's hard to be positive about this performance today," new defensive coordinator Ron English said. "I haven't gone through this in many years."

good lord, no bowl games this year either.  there is more but i was too depressed to post it all.  read it yourself here

ewinter43, this also sounds discouraging to me. But the real test will be the final scrimmage. All new defensive coaches and probably experimenting galore for this scrimmage may not give a true view of what to expect. The test will be how much the coaches can teach the "D" kids from their mistakes and whether they listen and learn. I think that will be the ongoing problem and/or solution for this team this year. Maybe we should move Cantwell to MLB and let Matt Simms QB. Remember the Gator Bowl. Cantwell has to be the toughest SOB on the whole team.

fansince66-   i know it's early and i shouldn't be down and normally i wouldn't.  but we lost a ton of people of a defense that wasn't even good.  they're converting all these players to defensive positions and that really worries me.  we're going to have starters who have never played these positions before?  wow.    simms dodged 3 people and had enough time to toss a 99 yard pass.  give me a break.

repeat of last season.  no pressure on the qb whatsoever and wide open receivers 40 yards downfield.

It's a whole heck of a lot better finding out the problems in March and April than it is in Oct. or Nov. English has 4 months to solidify the D. Heck, Petrino used to recruit Offense and those that couldn't make it went to the D. That was just two years ago. Now Coach K made some proactive changes to the D coaching staff. These players have only been on the field as a team once since this chance. Give him a little time to work some magic and get us a D to be proud of come this fall.

BTW.....I was optimistic at this point last year too. Now that Coach K has a year under his belt, I think there will be a new hunger in his eye as a result. He caught 10 kinds of h*ll last year, if he has any pride what so ever, he won't let it happen again.

Yeah, it could be really bad this year.  I think at the very least we'll have a decent D-line and at least some athletes everywhere else.  I like that Sergio Spencer's playing in the secondary, he was awesome in high school, but boy he looks small at the D-1 level.

Guys I realize that the defense is sketchy at best, but there are some positives to look to.  First, Jeff Brohm is the new OC.  I am looking forward to seeing a high octane offensive this year.  Second, Cantwell is good enough and tough enough to pull some games for us.  He was the Offensive MVP of the Gator Bowl playing against the #1 defense in the country with a broken nose.  Third, Bilial Powell is going to be the back, expect big things from him.  And with Coach K heading up the receivers this year I expect their route running to be tremendously improved from last season.  So, we don't have a defense.  Is this something new at UL?  Did I miss the memo reporting a great defense... ever?

Not a big football fan here, but I still follow the Cards and am rather new to the Football Message Boards.

I was talking to a good freind who used to do some coaching at the HS level, and has been going to UL practices for years.

During the Petrino years, he said the language was terrible and there was a lot of screaming. BUT he said he had never seen the coaching staff put a team through such organized, efficient drills as he did. Guys were being thrown 20-30 passes by all of the QBs within a matter of 10-15 minutes.

Small groups / stations all over the field. This would go on for about an hour.

Said you couldn't tell the 1st string guys from the others, until they started to scrimmage. BIG, strong, fast.

He came back from a practice this weekend, and saw most of the scrimmage that was reported in the CJ. Said the drills look worse than when he was coaching in HS. Disorganized chaos. Players just standing around waiting their turn. A few big guys, but nothing to be very impressed with.

Until you see the offense in motion.

Looking for the Cards to win maybe half of the games, and several will have to be with a score like 55-45. Cantwell is all that and a bag o chips. The running backs look great... but maybe they arent all that because of the terrible physicality and ability of the defense

At least there is one thing going for us this year - Low Expecations ;)

I hope for the best this year - at lease we have 8 home games - that should help a little bit!

Go Cards!
