Looks like Orlando Hernandez will win the fifth spot in the rotation over Mike Pelfrey. They both pitched today against the Orioles.

Here is the stat line:

El Duque - 5 innings 4H  1R  1ER  1BB 2SO

Pelfrey - 3.2 innings 6H  3R  3ER  3BB 2SO

All three of Pelfrey runs came in the bottom of the ninth.

El Duque was probably going to be given the spot regardless. Willie Randolph already that El Duque was not going to pitch out of the pen and I doubt they would have sent him down. Then again... nothing is etched in stone.

I hate to say it, but at this point, we kinda hafta sorta go with El Duque.  I hate the fact that he's soft tossing "fastballs" in the low 80's (and that's without Glavine's "finesse" too), but its hard to argue going with Pelfry when he's imploded in his past two outings.  I initially favored Pelfry for the 5th spot, but I can't fully endorse him now.  Don't forget that he's pitched the second half of these past two spring training games when all of the regulars have been taken out already.  Today, he faced 1 inning of regulars and then faced all minor leaguers the next 3 innings.

I don't exactly feel comfortable with either El Duque or Pelfry in the lineup right now, but clearly El Duque has "earned" a spot over Pelfrey.   Well, he may not actually deserve a spot in any rotation, but he's clearly more deserving right now than Pelfry.  What other options do we have?  Call up some other minor leaguers like Figeuroa or Parnell or sign someone like Claudio Vargas who was released from the Brewers?

El Duque will win the spot because he is more proven. Pelfry is to incosistant to be in the rotation. They should put him in the bullpen or trade him.

the duke is gonna stay up with the Mets till he gets injured sometime in june or may... by that time pelfry will be destroying in AAA and willie will have no other choice but to bring him up... where he will be very good and give willie a reason to keep him up in the show...
