Guess who I just came across?
Marvin Powell of the great mid 70s Trojan teams. He was a multi year all-american OLineman as I'm sure most of you recall. Anyway, we were able to talk Trojan football for about 15 minutes, and I just had a blast. The first thing I asked him was "What was it like playing in The Comeback game against Notre Dame in '74." He spoke about how unbelieveable that was and said that coming out of the tunnel at halftime, we was walking near AD and one of the ND coaches said, "Kick the ball to AD, he aint doing nothing this game." Marvin said that AD went NUTS at this and turned to Mosi, Ricky Bell, Farmer and said, he would run through the wedge, cut left and run it back. Of course, we all know, that is exactly what he did. Then I asked him, What happened against Missouri in '76? His belief was that '76 squad was better than the '72 Trojans, but that opening loss in which they overlooked Missouri kept them from the NC (they finished #2).
We spoke some more about his time there, how great Ricky Bell was and others, about his son playing there in the 90's. I just had a BLAST talking to him. He now lives in FL, but still loves SC football.
It was a great Trojan Day.
Fight On!
