The theory of communism is actually really cool. I haven't read the communist manifesto in years but thought it was amazing. The problem is that people are too selfish and greedy for the theory of communism to actually work in practice. That is why communist governments turn out to be despotic violators of human rights and exploiters of individuals. A capitalist system works because it harnesses some of the worst qualities of human nature and channels them for a societal good.
Very good analysis dbull. I agree with you. If Communism actually worked, it wouldn't be so bad, but it's just not feasible with human nature.
Although capitalism has many faults, it still easily trumps Communism on its benefits for society.

Leftists often criticize our present intervention in Iraq by bringing up the point that the US supported Saddam back in the 80s against Iran in the ill-fated--and ultimately stalemated--war that cost many Iraqi and Iranian lives.
First of all, I wonder at the logic of the point being made--obviously, if we really did create and support the monster Saddam, then we certainly have a deep obligation to take him out, and even to sacrifice thousands to undo the damage, regrettable though that would be. What was the alternative? Say "Oops, sorry!" and let his regime fester, uncorrected, forever?
Of course not. If the critics were sincere about their argument, it would be used to justify our more recent intervention, not to blast it. But somehow, I've never seen it used that way--odd, isn't it? It does me make wonder whether their argument might just be sophistry.

We dumped Saddam when he invaded Kuwait; dumped him for good. The rest of the history is more familiar than the earlier years; I won't bother to reiterate it here.
So what are we are left with? A messy business, the choices a country must make in the real world.
I'm not whitewashing how bad it was. But those who require moral perfection in our actions on the world stage are either hopelessly idealistic and out of touch with the consequences of what acting on that idealism would have wrought (in this case, the triumph of the Soviets, and later the Iranians), or they are cynically mouthing arguments they don't even believe.
I wish the world were otherwise. But it's not, and pretending the lion has already lain down with the lamb is an absurdity, or worse. There are plenty of lions out here, about to devour huge herds of lambs, and sometimes all we can do is back the lion who seems less voracious.

It doesn't work because people are selfish, but it also fails because many individuals are lazy. It assumes that everyone is created equal in terms of talent, drive, and ethics. College professors love it, but in the real world...not so much.

Which comes first, poverty or the appeal of collectivism, whether it is communism, fascism, or theocracy (and to some extent monarchy)? Does collectivist mentality breed the poverty that plagues them? Those of the left persuasion generally put forth the idea that if we are to end Islamic terrorism (for example) we need to improve the quality of life for the poor folks who follow the vile programs. One can only assume they mean to do so through transfer before any signs of detachment of the rank and file from collectivist mentalities. This to me seems to be paying foxes to eat chickens and then decide whether they can give them up.

Communism took hold in parts of the world where peaceful upward mobility was rare to nonexistent. In a nation with a large middle class such as the US or the UK, the job situation is not so desperate that many would consider that the only alternative left is to force the bourgeoisie to surrender its stuff at gunpoint. And even a century ago, long before the "safety nets" of FDR and LBJ, living conditions in the US were far preferable to those in, say, Russia and China. (They swarmed to Ellis Island for a reason.)

So true IIPapa.
Russia, with the exception of the elite ruling class was only just beginning to emerge from a feudal, almost midevil way of living the "farmers" were essentially serfs living in a feudal collective, surviving one might say at the whim of the local " land lord" or Baron.
Confronted with war from outside and coupled with growing civil unrest and modern influences and ideas from outside of Russia the place was ripe for revolution.
For the average Russian in 1916 Communism made perfect sense and offered "at least on paper" a just and fair world that was not so radically different than way they were already living except Communism offered each Russian a bigger slice of the pie.

How did we screw up so much?
After Bush, any democrat should have won!
Gore, Kerry, Edwards...
But Hillary and Obama?
We blew it!
Now we have no chance against McCain.
The Democratic Party screws itself...again.

Oh darn! I thought you said COLUMNIST. I was going to vote for Dennis Dodd. Yeah.
As long as we're on politics, though, who is your favorite fascist? Dick Cheney, GW Bush, Mitt Romney, Francisco Franco, Adolph Hitler or Benito Mussolini?
