My name is oldhead and I used to be a baseball junkie. Then came another baseball strike and this one shut down the World Series, and we get a new owner who pressured the wimps in government to hand over a couple hundred million bucks worth of property and I'd had enough! So I cut off my nose and said the heck with 'em! Who cares if baseball was the first sport I grew to love watching instead of playing. (actually I mostly listened to the radio in the early days) Who cares if these overpaid prima donna's won't miss my paltry contributions to the teams overall revenues? Well, it seems as though I still care whether I want to  or not.  So, I put the question to you, what do I have to look forward to?

I think all Pirate fans have similar feelings.  Who in their right mind would become a fan of a team that has had 15 straight losing seasons.  The only fans that are left are the ones that have been fans for a long time.  The only thing I can say at this point is....I feel your pain.  I lived in the burgh when PNC opened and I had a partial season plan.  I got my wife all excited for the bucs etc.  We went the first game blah blah blah.  We all know what happened next.  My wife now refuses to even talk about baseball.  She said she will discuss it again when the Pirates have a winning season.....It has been a few years since then.....Anyway, let me get off my soapbox and answer your question.

I hope you are familiar with David and Goliath.  We are David in the baseball setting.  We HAVE to develop young players and these players HAVE perform well to succeed. Where the Yankees of the baseball world will just buy another player when one does not work out.   Unfortunately our young players have not performed well....so far.  This year our team is really young and very talented.  If they perform well, we can compete...and hopefully win.

Just know this.  We will NOT be able to keep our players for long if they are performing well.  So we HAVE to keep developing players to take their place.  That is the only way we will have winning baseball in the burgh again.

Welcome back.

GO BUCS!!
