you'll have to excuse the Reds fan. I think they are still bitter they didn't get bedard .
and to the Cubs fans................thanks for the kinda words. sorry for the 4 bargain, I meant to give you a 5. that just means you'll have to post on here again.
And, I do agree that none of use will know what offer was really on the table, or what players were discussed. I do think that Macphail and Hendry just could not come to an agreement. Which is ok on both sides. Yes, it has taken very long, but patients is sometimes overlooked. both of these teams work great together in trades. I dont think there was any bitterness between the two sides, we just couldn't agree. and again, that is ok. It all comes down to how these players are perceived by each organization. And who knows, maybe something will still get done and shock us all. but for now it seems it wont happen right now. good luck this year cubs fans.
Now, why is it that teams cannot trade draft picks in MLB? Collective Bargaining? To many minor leaguers for one roster? just wondering why that can't be part of the discussion ever.
While rebuilding is what we're trying to do, trading away the best pure leadoff hitter in the game for players that we feel aren't up to par is not a wise choice. We trading Bedard because the package was great. We got Jones as well as a closer and young pitching prospects. The Cubs were offering us pitchers who have not done well in proving themselves just yet. To put it clearly, there was no player that has the potential to be a star, in my opinion. We can get better offers, and if we don't, then we get a great player and humanitarian. I'm happy he's staying.
hey dirtwad .. what difference does it make ? .. you guys sill wont win sh&t for the next 50 years .. we are prob gonna come out better for not trading.. you want talent? dont offer a bunch of scrubs
when was the last time the Reds were even relevant? Not recently, (wild card run, sorta, in 06) but the thread is about the Cubs and the Orioles. The Reds have their own mess to attend. The comment about Bedard: I never heard the Reds were seriously ever in that market. Some rumor-mongers said they were, but that was never anything beyond what you read on these boards.
Scrubs? Take a look at Cedeno's minor league stats. Last year he hit .359 with an OBP of .422. He is only 25 years old and has 1 year of major league experience. He has terrific range and will improve with experience. Eric Patterson batted .297 last year with AAA Iowa while stealing 24 bags. This kid has looked impressive all spring with his ability to get onbase. His strike zone is not as erratic as his older brother's. Some scouts have said that his defense is suspect, but I thought he played well this spring. He is still young at the age of 25 and has 4 years of collegiate experience under his belt. Sean Gallagher is 23 years old and went 10-3 last year in the minors with an era of 3.10. He pitched 101 innings allowing only 37 walks to 91 strikeouts. Jose Ceda is only 21 years old and throws 100 mph with a slider that is toxic according to many major league scouts. He ended last season with nearly 22 hitless innings in class A ball as a 21 year old. I do not care if you are pitching in the YMCA pickup league, pitching 22 innings of hitless ball is impressive. This kid has Marmol type stuff and is a future dominant setup man and could potentially close in his career if he can stay healthy. These are the main players that have been talked about in the Roberts trade and they would improve the O's ball club trumendously. As a Cubs fan, I am not trying to slip one passed anyone. I think that these guys will become good major league players with time and experience, but I also know that holding on to them is not going to help this team since there are not enough roster spots to hold them. Both Ceda and Gallagher are in the top 5 prospects the Cubs have in their system. What team is going offer 2 of their top 5 prospects for a 2nd baseman? You have to keep in mind, Roberts PLAYS 2nd BASE! He is not a dominant pitcher nor is he versitle enough to move to other positions. YOU ARE OVER ESTIMATING HIS VALUE!
Also in the deal was Donnie Veal who has a torn labrum that has not been repaired. Even still, it is the worst possible injury a pitcher could have. Eric Patterson was not in the last rumored deal for Roberts either. Cedeno has proven he cannot hit major league pitching, so his minor league numbers don't really matter. In 688 ML AB's, he is only hitting .245 with a miserable .277 OBP and 138 strikeouts to 25 walks. His MiL stats are inflated anyway due to the hitters park he routinely hit in down there. He wouldn't survive in the AL East.
So with Veal, that's basically a wasted return because of his shoulder and probably won't have much of a major league career. With Cedeno, he hasn't proven he can even hang in the big leagues and in fact has proven the opposite thus far. By the way, Veal is in your top 10 prospects as well. The Cubs took a gamble that his shoulder would hold up and he still hasn't regained the curve that made scouts rave. Considering the nature of his injury, he never will get it back and eventually, his fast ball will probably go too. He's been reduced to a one pitch flame thrower with a torn labrum held together by scar tissue. As someone else said, he is an injury waiting to happen. If it wasn't for the labrum, I would take Veal in a second, but we already have Patton and we had Jaret Wright last year. We don't need another pitcher with a bum shoulder and especially not a prospect. Torn labrums end careers eventually almost without fail.
Personally, I like Gallagher and Ceda, but because of the seemingly high probability of Cedeno and Veal having little to no chance at success in the majors, that's basically only two players and two fillers. Roberts is a fan favorite and is favored by Angelos and I think by now, people know it is going to take some overpaying to get him out of here. Veal and Cedeno are the deal breakers for me. If you want to place such high value on Cedeno's minor league numbers, then you keep him. I'm sure you'll have a chance at some minor league championships, but Cedeno has had enough ML AB's to prove something and he hasn't except that he can't hit in the majors.
- Depressing: 64% of the population doesn’t understand that the greatness of our country came from limited government, free markets, personal responsibility and everything that goes with that. With every election, we get further and further away from that greatness. God help us, before it's too late.
