I think we can finally put this one to rest, at least for a few months. Andy MacPhail told reporters that "a Brian Roberts deal with the Cubs is off the table," according to Paul Sullivan. You can argue the semantics - dead, impasse, off the table - but it doesn't look like anything's happening anytime soon. Sullivan doesn't see it reviving before July.
Since the Orioles couldn't match up with the Cubs, it might make sense for MacPhail to start engaging other teams about Roberts.
Glad to see Brian Roberts staying, at least for now. Bummer is I traded for him in one of my fantasy leagues thinking he would be hitting in front of Derek Lee, Aramis Ramirez and Alphonso Soriano.

Nice post Jazznbluz... I am one who is happy to see B-Robby remain with the O's. Never saw a trade worthy of him and didn't really wanna see him go! I was fearful of "trade mania" decimating the O's in the name of rebuilding . Now at least we have one "mentor" the rookies can look up to...at least for a while! Should Andy make a trade later, we'll have to live with it, but hopefully the O's can maintain one All-Star for another season!

Here's the article from the O's website: Hopefully you can rate this one :-)
Months of speculation appeared to die on the vine Wednesday, when Baltimore executive Andy MacPhail said that he doesn't expect to complete a Brian Roberts trade by Opening Day. MacPhail, the team's president of baseball operations, said that the Orioles have had lengthy discussions with the Cubs, but haven't found a middle ground.
"We continue to talk," he said. "I think with each passing hour at this point, it's less and less likely. I just think it's less likely the further we get this close into it, the greater likelihood that we're going to start with what we have."
Roberts, a two-time All-Star, is regarded as one of Baltimore's best trade chips. The Orioles see him as one of their most productive position players and one of the prime candidates to bring back prospects in their rebuilding movement, and rumors have surrounded his status since December's Winter Meetings.
Chicago has been hot in pursuit of Roberts, and published reports have indicated that they'd be willing to part with prospects like Sean Gallagher, Eric Patterson and Ronny Cedeno.
MacPhail, who has already traded veterans Miguel Tejada and Erik Bedard, said that he'd hoped to have any trade done by Opening Day and that things become problematic once the regular season starts.
"I don't really like to characterize our discussions with other clubs. I'll leave that to someone else," he said. "I've mentioned to Brian that I think it's unlikely that something happens as well."
Baltimore manager Dave Trembley has consistently said that he can't imagine his batting order without Roberts, a switch-hitting fixture at the top of the lineup. However, he's also said that he'll do whatever he needs to do.

I think you guys are all f'd in the head. What is in the water in Baltimore? The idea of not trading Roberts does not make any sense if the team is looking to rebuild. Regardless if Roberts is on the team or not, there is no way out of losing 90 games this year. It is the unfortanate truth. So why not get the best package available for your top player and do something positive for your organization? It is completely disrespectful to trade all the talent around a guy and keep Roberts in a Balitmore uniform when he is in his prime. The offer that is on the table for Roberts is more than fair. Hendry would even take on the massive obscene contract of Jay Payton to allow Tike Redman and Adam Jones to play everyday. What if Roberts gets injured half-way through the season? The guy is a free agent in two seasons. The Orioles will not see a winning season for at least 3 years. Who is going to offer more? If he is not dealt to the Cubs, I hope it is talked about for the next 20 years as the worst trade that never happened.

The offer that was on the table from the Cubs was full of maybes that were leaning on the side of never will bes and injury risks, and a starting pitcher that has some serious ego issues that would not want to be on this team. In return we'd be giving up two-time All Star Roberts and and Payton, who is actually having a pretty damn good Spring Training (+.300 BA as well as being above his average with several other key stats, and his defense seems to have reverted back to his earlier form, he seems to be having the same rejuvination as Mora). Keeping one or both of them until the break isn't a bad idea, as far as quality, MacPhail could do better, and obviously, he knows it. Not every trade has to be a 4 or 5 for 1or 2 deal.

dirtbag..................the O's are not gonna trade a 2nd base all-star to the Cubs with the crap of players the cubs had on the table. we can get a much better return at the all-star break. So maybe if you understood who the cubs wanted to give us for roberts, then maybe you would understand why its not going to happen. or maybe you are the one messed up in the head.
This is fine with me. I didn't want to just give roberts away. I wasn't happy with what the cubs were offering. and its there right not to want to give too much, just as its our right to want more of a return. Hopefully he'll have a GREAT 1st half, and teams will be droolling over him.

I would be hard pressed to think that you would know anything about the players being offered. All I am saying is that if the O's are willing to trade away a young left-handed pitcher that throws gas, but hang onto a guy that may or may not be heathly by all-star break, why take a chance. The players that were being offered were not crap by the way. I am wondering when Camden Yards will hold a promotion for the 100th fan to walk through the gates gets to fill in a short stop that night. YOU HAD FREDDY BYNUM playing there up until two weeks ago! You have no shortstop and Cedeno will be a solid everyday player. Granted he is not Roberts, but getting 4 guys for 1 is not a bad move considering the other players involved. Do a little evaluation before calling a package crap because you have not heard of any of the players being offered. Or maybe you are content with Freddy Bynum. "Hopefully" he has a great 1st half and there is a team that desperately needs his services. What if herniates a disk in his back and cannot play for a whole month. I think there is too much wishful thinking for a team that will lose 90+ ballgames a year.

Try reading the other threads on the subject. Some of us have done quite a bit of digging on the players involved and share the same sentiment.

yeah, and baltoboi was just stating the obvious. A lot of us had done plenty of digging on these players that the Cubs were offering for Roberts. Most were 4th or 5th starter, bulpen guys, or a slight upgrade to hernandez or fahey. Dont come on here complaining about how the O's should of done this just because the cubs missed out on getting roberts.
Yeah, we did trade away our ace pitcher, and got back a lot of quality players. Some even think that we got more for bedard than the Twins got for santana...................but of course thats all in opinion.
We were not in a hurry to move roberts. It was said from day one. I mean, as of last week, the cubs had like 4 prospects that were "untouchable". nobody wants to deal with that. Macphail made the right move....................we'll get more for him at the all-star break.

The thing is, for the Orioles, Brian Roberts may not become more valuable. As the remaining time on his deal lessens, so may his trade value. Now, if MacPhail felt he was not getting value, he maybe is doing the correct thing. But, what if there is no market at the trade deadline for Roberts? Now you are looking at a waiver deal or an off season deal with 1 year remaining. It can go either way, but MacPhail is gambling that he can beat the Cubs offer. Add that to the fact that Roberts is not particularly happy to be on a team that is rebuilding as he nears the end of his prime and MacPhail's gamble increases.
The fact that Roberts is a 2 time all-star is not what he is trading, at least not with the Cubs. What he is trading is one of a handful of true leadoff hitters. That was where Roberts value lied for the Cubs. DeRosa is fine at 2B, but now the Cubs have to bat Theriot and perhaps Reed Johnson (when he subs for Pie) at leadoff.
As far as what the Cubs were offering, it was all rumors. Hendry reveals he was not sure what the O's wanted. Ceda may have or may not have been added. Gallagher or Marshall or both? Colvin? Cedeno? Murton? Pie? The rumors have been all ove | |
