I do not believe fontenot was out of options, so I was surprised by keeping fontenot over cintron. However, I don't believe it really makes much difference. I think a lot of people are forgetting that Fontenot was the SS on that LSU team. So he can play the position, he had 1 bad inning, otherwise he was at least decent, which is often time all you need from a "utility"player. 3rd is a reaction position, and the Cubs have a lot of guys who can play there if needed(derosa, theriot, cedeno, a-ram). Once Johnson was aquired, then cintron and fontenot were interchangeable.
NYN is correct about cedeno, and there is no way he would have cleared waivers. IF they would have waived him he would have been the Orioles opening day SS. He also hit over 300 this spring, and has hit better lately, which is a good sign. There is no question about his talent, just his ability to put it together. IF that has happened, he could be a huge plus for this team.
The question for murton comes down to is it more valueable to have a 5th outfielder and RH pinch hitter, or to have a 12th pitcher. Personally I think in the NL your better off with a 5th outfielder and 11 pitchers. Especially when 1 of your bull pen pitchers is a start(lieber), who can probably go deep in a game if needed.
