After Jim's masterful job of getting Reed Johnson signed for not much more than a pat on the back and a jersey with his name on it the powers that be with the Cubs blew it on the last round of roster cuts. Keeping Mike Fontenot with the big league club while sending Alex Cintron packing was flat out dumb IMO. Mike Fontenot is hitting around .245 this spring and is at best an average defensive 2B that can't play any other positions. Cintron meanwhile is hitting over .300 this spring and before getting hit in the face by Mark DeRosa's foul ball was playing good defense, good defense at 2B, SS and 3B mind you. Since the Brian Roberts deal appears to be dead (and honesly I could care less if it is, I like our roster as it sits) you lose DeRosa's ability to play multiple positions creating an even larger need to keep a guy like Cintron with the team. Sending Matt Murton to AAA is laughable as well. I really hope we trade him somewhere he can play. I don't care where it is or what we get for him. I am a big Murton fan and I hate to see him go to waste in Iowa.

Has it been confirmed that Murton was sent to AAA?

So, if you disagree with who he chooses to keep for the 25th spot on the roster, he no longer can get your approval? I would prefer to look at the overall picture than nitpick. If he and Lou feel that Fontenot is a better keep than Cintron, I am ok. Especially sense DeRosa can play multiple positions and Fontenot can play 2B when DeRosa plays 3B, 1B, or RF.

Like I said Jazz, it's an opinion. I guess lost in all of this is that Ronny Cedeno is still with the big league club because IMO he's out of options and they don't want to lose him and not get something in return. Instead he'll rot on the bench. I'd rather have Mike Fontenot's left handed bat or Matt Murton on the bench than Cedeno, but they can send Murton to Iowa and get away with it. From what the guys have been saying about wanting speed and athleticism and versitility, it just surprises me that you'd chose Fontenot as your guy over a guy who can play more positions.

I agree with the Murton opinion, but disagree with the Fontenot opinion. Murton has the ability to be a good hitter, but on defense he isn't as strong. I noticed the lineup Lou is going with is really good defensively. I just don't think Murton is going to fit in the formula Lou is building for this team (Lou idea's = Murton defensive liability). I always like Fontenot and even though Cintron is good as well I think Fontenot is better suited for the Cubs at the moment. Up the middle him and Theriot have great chemistry so when Lou wants a definsive lineup you can expect to see him in there.
Roster is looking good in my opinion. Oh and I really hope they do not bat Fukudome 5th and rather see him batting second or leadoff.

Wow Im shocked they cut loose Cintron,I thought that was as good a move as getting Johnson.I had heard that Fontenot was also out of options, but im not sure about that.I like the kid ,but i see him as another guy we fall in love with because hes a gritty little guy,but he has no arm,hes a defensive liability! As far as Cedeno maybe the Cubs are still hoping he will live up to expectations, but he is the WORST baserunner ever!Well in Jim and Lou we trust.Thanx CubManBen,Ive got my fix!

F ontenot did get a few shots playing SS this yr and I remember a couple good plays he looked good ranging far to his right and scooping up ball.If he can play SS and 2b then it makes more sense also if cintron has options and Fontenot doesnt that also makes sense to keep Fontenot. Its not that everyone sent to 3A is going to stay there all year.I had a feeling piniella was giving Fontenot a second look this year so im not surprised he stays with team, but he wont stay if he doesnt perform.

Maybe just maybe this has a bigger picture. McPhail could have been waiting to see if the Cubs cut loose Cedeno or Fontenot, that is why he stalled. Then he could have picked them up for nothing and got another prospect included in the Roberts deal. Now that Hendry so shrewdly kept what McPhail was wanting to get for nothing, the deal can go through. That must be it. HENDRY IS A GREAT GM

heres the way i see it..
cintron was just an insurance guy for the spring in case of injuries or a trade plus he may not be 100% yet from his hammy .. i can see them keeping cedeno cause he has played some outfield plus he plays 3rd ss and 2b, fontenot is a guy piniella likes, he's just one of those scrappy guys.. too bad for murton but if you play a corner OF you need some pop in the bat or alot of speed and he lacks in both areas.. so Reed Johnson and Ronny Cedeno are the outfielders with ward, and cedeno, fontenot, and ward can manage the infield.. the other reason why cintron was expendable is patterson, if cedeno or fontenot dont do the job or traded then patterson can step in...
i can see murton traded by this weekend for a minor leaguer or the famous PTBNL..
lol hendry hot streak dont come to an end because he and piniella decided to stay with cedeno and fontenot over citron and place murton in the minors or trade him..

Fontenot is a terrible fielder. I don't know why they would keep him over Murton. Murton is actually a major league calibur player. The fact that he a right hand hitter not only has cost him the right fielder position, but now a position on the team!
I assume they are trying to trade him and get some value for him. I mean, what the hell?

I wasn't overly impressed by Cintron despite his decent average, and not surprised he did not make the team. Fontenot looked better and Lou likes the kid's bat. He also said he was impressed with Fontenot's defense. He needs a lefty off the bench in addition to Daryle Ward, so I am not surprised by this move (read my comments on another post from this morning). I am not surprised that Murton is in AAA, he has no role on this team and we don't need five outfielders, plus Daryle Ward who can play the corner spots about as well as Murton does, but hits significantly more. Cedeno made the team because #1 he had a good spring (again) and he is now out of minor league options. He either sticks with the team or we cut him outright, and I think he has more value than to be cut outright.

Are you kidding? He's lefthanded and can hit good in a pinch but thats it.

Ronny Cedeno is out of options and, short of a trade, he will be on this roster.
I don't think Mike Fontenot is versatile enough to be on this roster. He is only average in the field. He has average speed. He has no pop in his bat. But, Lou apparently would rather have a sixth infielder as opposed to a fifth outfielder.
Too bad for Murton, he is the best player that will not make this team.

I would much rather have Matt Murton at AAA batting every day than wasting away on the bench. He is a call away if the Cubs need him and he will be sharp. He is not going to be a defensive replacement and if the Cubs do end up trading him so he gets an everyday chance I would be happy for him.
Fontenot vs. Cintron for me is a toss up and you have to trust Lou and Hendry to put the best group in place. I am fine either way. Neither player is the difference in a deep playoff run.
I still think this is the deepest team I have seen come north in a long time and because of that I will disagree that Hendry has made a mistake. No GM since the late 60s has put more talent on the field than at the start of a year then he has. The question now is will he be able to pull the right levers as the season goes on to end on top. I think he can.

I agree with that from the poster just above. It's no co-incidence that the more players the Cubs send down, get rid of ,the better the players remaining look.I am a long time Cub fan ( for what thats worth) and this team looks very very good and I was one who was critical earlier at how bad they looked ,but there were too many trees to see the forest until a week or so ago..
Cubs are looking GOOD now that we can see the 25 guys who will make up the team!

Fontenot has no pop in his bat! He hass more than you think when he hit that 430 foot homerun at wrigley last year.
