There will be a bunch of players put on waivers today. Today is the waive or pay the player for the year cut-off. Alex Cintron was already released by the Cubs, as was Claudio Vargas of the Brewers and Byung-Hyun Kim of the Pirates. There are others. Maybe the Orioles can find a match to play SS, 2B and act in a utility role.
Vargas would be a good pickup. I'm still trying to figure out why they just released him. Gotay also and Cintron if there's nothing better. Kim might have a future as a bullpen arm, but I'd pass as well unless it was dirt cheap.
I was hoping to find some time today to do a little digging and see who would be waiver fodder in advance, but that thing called work got in the way of some quality baseball data diving. That said, Cintron would be a plus as well as Vargas (I too am shocked they just let him go). Looking forward to see what players become available.
Just looked at MLB transactions and to date only release of note other than the afore mentioned was Rudy Seanez. I don't think he helps the cause much.
I wouldn't mind Ruben Gotay, bt thats about it. Vargas has put up solid numbers in his career K/9 and BB/9, but his ERA's are horrible for a starter in Camden Yards.
I also like Marcus Giles, who got released by the Rockies. He isn't 30 yet, and fell of the map after a lousy season. He or Gotay could be too we look at for SS.
I wounldn't mind seeing us get Marcus Giles, Alex Citron, or Ruben Gotay. They could fill a gap. I dont think trembley is all that happy with Fahey and Herndandez.
I know he's gone on record saying he isn't happy with Hernandez, I don't know what he thinks of Fahey, but he's been dropping off over the last week or so and currently isn't looking any better than Luis. I wouldn't mind going for an outside option, especially since we all already know that Fahey and Hernandez are low tier utility players at best.
I say grab Gotay and make him our starting SS. I just flat-out dont like Fahey as a starter and Hernandez has made 6 errors and I think he is hitting .171. I dont care how good (or bad) his defense is, if he cant hit above .200, then he is sad. Bring in Gotay, he can hit for power and he's still young (25 I think).
Gotay is 25 years old, and has shown glimpses of his potential throughout his few seasons with the Royals and Mets. He would be a nice addition, and could probably take over SS. I seriously doubt the Mets would consider him worth much, as they have Marlon Anderso, Jose Valentin and Luis Castillo maning second base.
