Anyone else think he should get the five spot over Thompson?
I do... I think he has nasty stuff if he can control it. Six shutout innings today... two wins so far this spring.

Reyes has the most potential when you compare him to Thompson or Wellemeyer. I save give Reyes the opportunity again to be in the starting rotation. Let Thompson and Wellemeyer battle it out for the last spot. If you do that, what do you do when Pineiro, Clement, Mulder, and even Carpenter come back. That would give you 9 starting pitchers for 5 spots. I guess it is a good problem to have but some really tough decisions will have to be made if everyone is healthy.

You all might think I am crazy but in my opinion Reyes has pitched better than wainwright and Looper but maybe not as well as Thompson. If you think about it Looper is a converted RP he might do better there. Thompson is more of a long RP. When Reyes is on he can be very tough to hit plus he is a SP. Wellemeyer is much like Thompson. When everyone is healthy (all ten SP's we have), which will not be until July, I could see them packaging Reyes Duncan and maybe a prospect to get a power bat in LF. I mean one that can actually play defense better then Dunc. I really would like to see him suceed here but something in me tells me his days are numbered. Maybe we could come up with a package of 4 or 5 players to send to NY for A-Rod (he could play SS). At least Dunc could play with his brother there, I think he would agree to that. Especially if we threw his father in there also. One big happy family in NY. Just kidding.
With all seriousness when the SP comes back healthy we will have a great one.
Carp
Mulder
Loshe
Wainwright
Clement
Or something like that.

Wellemeyer and Thompson are the kind of pitchers that will get you 5 or 6 innings of 3 runs allowed kind of work. Nothing spectacular, but at least you are in the game. You figure to win at least half of their starts the way we're hitting.
With Reyes, you never know when he's gonna fall apart in the 3rd inning, or earlier. So you are almost guaranteed to lose that game, plus you blow through 6 pitchers in one game, overworking your staff. That is what killed us last year, Reyes and Wells getting knocked out early.
Of the trio Carp, Mulder, and Clement, we will be very lucky to get two healthy pitchers. Maybe we get only one. Anyone that thinks we're gonna have nine starters to choose from hasn't been following baseball very long. Why did they acquire Lohse if they thought it was a sure thing that these guys would all come back to pre-injury form?
At this point, we don't even know if Pineiro will pitch this year. Remember last year? Carp was the opening day starter, and they didn't figure out how bad he was hurt until the break!!! pipe

I'm pretty sure we won't see Carpenter back unless we are in a race for the playoffs. Exactly what PIPE said, we have already gone ahead and made arrangements to be without Carp for the whole year. As for Anthony Reyes, he is good, a little like Ankiel was, wild, but they could be playing with his mentality a little. Make him realize he was bad last year, and show us what you got, earn the spot back. I still think we are going to be a solid squad this year, and Tony and the team will turn a lot of heads. We need Albert all year though!

I recall Game 1 of he 2006 WS and what he did to the Tigers in Detroit. I didn't know he had that in him. Maybe he needs to be in an ultra-pressure situation to perform. If he can somehow figure out how to keep his head on straight (at least it looks to me and many posters that it's mental) I like him at any spot in the rotation...er while Carp is hurt anyway (sorry, not ahead of Carpenter).

So let me get this straight..
Anthony Reyes pitches 6 shutout innings, 3 hitter two days ago. And gets sent down. It is no secret he had an off year last year, but yes the 2006 WS Game 1 winner is going to the minor leagues. The rumor is that he hasn't got along with Tony and wants to do his own thing (use his own stuff, not Duncan's). So he gets demoted. Scott Rolen, who is a pretty good guy is now gone because of a relationship with Tony LaRussa (Mr. DUI). Say what you want about Rolen playing hurt, this and that. Isn't that what Albert Pujols is doing now? Playing hurt?
And think about this.... Dan Haren was here in 2006 and we did not even start him once in the playoffs, and then he goes on to success in the AL!???? He dominates the AL!!!!!! Haren could not only pitch, but the kid could hit too! But we had to get the older guy from California (Mark Mulder).
Be lucky we didn't trade Reyes and hope that Jose Oquendo gets the reigns soon!
Something is not right.

First of all, from what I hear the ST game you are talking about was against the Nationals, and there was a crazy wind that day that blew in favor of the pitchers. Because of this the Nats starter who isnt anything special, also hurled a great game. So you cant judge Reyes on one game, good or not.
Second, Im pretty sure Dunc knows what he his talking about, if what you say is true, and he knows what is best for Anthony and the Cardinals.
Third, Dan Haren wasnt anything special on the Cardinals. He was pretty much one of our worst bullpen guys on that team, the reason he didnt play. Sure, the guy had potential, but when we pulled the trigger on that deal we were desperate for a number 1, which we didnt know we had in Carp. Everybody loved the deal when it happened and nobody cared that we lost Haren. He didnt even get good until a couple of years later and Mulder helped us get to the 05 NLCS. Sure looking back, it was a very lopsided deal but we pretty much come out on the better end on every trade we make. Glaus for Rolen is already starting to look that way. What about Wainwright, King, and Marquis for JD Drew. You dont think the Braves regret trading Adam to us for JD freakin Drew? What about Belliard for Luna. Rolen for Palanco, Edmonds for Kennedy. Pineiro for nothing, Weaver for nothing, Larry Walker for nothing. Trust me, we are one of the best organizations when it comes to trades. Thats why we didnt trade our entire farm system for an aging Sanatana. Just my 2 cents.
