John Maine has been stellar this season and I recently read an article that quoted Billy Wagner saying he thinks Maine will win 20 games.  I don't doubt his ability, he was masterful the first half of last year, but i still think he may have endurance problems down the stretch.  This will only be his second season starting.  I would take 15-17 wins from him in a heartbeat.  Thoughts anyone?

while there is no doubt about J M's potential to win 20, he could have gotten it last year. The issue wasn't endurance, it was run support in the 2nd half. Same for Perez, as far as potential. I love John Maine. Anything less than an 18 win season would be a disappointment this year. He has all the tools of a bona fide # 2 maybe even # 1 pitcher.

I don't see any 20-game winners on the Mets. I am not bashing the players. Its just a combination of the result of relief pitching specialization and the way Willie manages the pitching staff.

Remember, the 1986 team won 108 games, and guess what? No 20-game winners!

Fans are predicting both Santana and Maine to win 20, and pedro and perez to win 15. Its not gonna happen.

There are my predictions, and I think they're a little more realistic.

Santana 18-6

Martinez 13-6

Maine 16-9

Perez - 14-11

I don't even want to speculate what a 5th starter will do.

A 20 game win season is something special, they don't come around every season clearly, but I have to agree, that if Maine, in the #4 pitcher spot, doesn't reach 16-18 wins, the way he pitched last season, and the strides he's taken this year shown in spring training, theres clear reason for him to be disappointed.
I also think you are shafting Martinez there a little.  The man came in last season and went 3-1 in 5 games.  Lets say that he gets 25 starts this season (which is on the lower side) thats already 15 wins.  Martinez may not give you the long innings all the much, but his 2.45 ERA shows that he will give you the low run totals to allow his team to win more often than not.

My feeling, as its been all along, isn't how many games can the Mets pitchers keep their team in it and give them a good chance to win, but instead, how many runs can the mets score to allow their pitchers low run totals to be enough for a win.  I'm deathly afraid this year of the 3-2 loss as I don't see the back of our line up being all that formidable.

But all answers will be answered soon enough... less than a week till mets first pitch!  LETS GO METS!

I know 20 win seasons don't come along that often and its something special.  I'm just surprised Wagner would come out and make that kind of prediction.  He's forgotten more about pitching then i'll ever know, but thats a real tribute to how highly he thinks Maine's potential is.

He for sure has the potential to do it. This year...I think he also has a pretty good chance, his spring was fantastic. Especailly since he's a #3 starter, he will have much more of a chance. Last year, both him and Ollie would have had much better seasons if they were at the back end of the rotation, since they were at the front end they both got a lot of mis-matches, look to see both of them have breakout years.

I actually think hes a #4 starter, Oli is at #3, according to the order in which they get their starts.  BUT I completely agree with the sentiment of the post.  Oli and Maine should each tack a couple extra wins on just due to the fact that the mound for the other team is a weaker pitcher by theory.

The no Mota thing also made me laugh.  Mets roid free 08!

I think Maine in his 2nd full season will be lights out but 20 wins??? I think 17 and a (Mets first) no hitter to close out Shea.

caa0505 - I have to agree with you.  I believe that John Maine 2008 will be better than JM2007, but 20 wins?  That's a lot for a guy that is the 3rd or 4th pitcher in your rotation ... As for the No hitter, I can see it.  The Maine Man seems to flirt with the No Hitter every 4th start he gets.  I like Maine's stuff ...
