I'm a little concerned now that the Padres best spring hitter has been sent to AAA. Here is why:

Jim Edmonds: Has "worked so hard" this offseason and is as "healthy as ever", and goes down swinging (literally). He's old, fragile and may not play 100 games this year.

Scott Hairston:  Looking forward to seeing what he can do playing full time, but he is not a great defensive outfielder and has not proven he's an everyday player yet.

Brian Giles: He is a tough guy but he's coming off knee surgery. He's another year older too. He's also a fairly overpaid .275 hitting leadoff guy ($10 mil)

Jody Gerut: Out of baseball with injuries for the better part of 2 years. He's looked decent in spring training but trailed off after a hot start.

Callix Crabbe: Utility guy that hs also looked good in the spring, but is a rule 5 guy that has not played at the big league level.

Jeff DaVannon: Cut

Headley: Sent to Portland

This is an outfield that could surprise when its all said and done with some of the young guys, but on paper looks very weak. A little pessimistic maybe, but outsiders probably look at our opening day outfield and say "huh?". Thoughts?

Yes I am scared too, if Edmonds plays half the year we will be lucky and Giles better days are behind him. Hairston could be the guys that really surprises us which I hope happens  but I would have to rank our outfield near the bottom of the league based on our current players play the last few years. Other than Hairston Headley was the only one with a chance to make a big splash this year now he is in Portland. We need to make a trade for some better talent in the outfield unless they are trying to get by until some young kids are ready in the farm system other than Headley, but then how long can we wait because we have pitching to win now.

Our outfield's offense doesn't worry me as much the defense does. Giles will give us good production on top (not prototypical leadoff style), but good production none-the-less. I also think Hairston will put up solid offensive numbers this year. But, with Edmonds fragile body in center, I think the Pads are vulnerable, as I don't think Hairston is best suited to play center, especially considering Petco's dimensions.

As a side note, I hope Headley doesn't end up as trade bait. We've waited so long to see what he can do with the big club and it would be a real downer to see it happen with a different club. Given the Pads age (Giles, Edmonds, etc) I don't see him going anywhere, but still, you never know...

I've been lurking these boards for a bit now, not because I'm Padres fan, but Gerut went to the high school where I teach.  We've been following his career, and if he can stay healthy, this guy will play good baseball, make good decisions at the plate, and will hustle and make plays in the outfield.  Good luck, Jody.

I'm excited that Gerut is going to get a chance to play every day for a while. He had potential in Cleveland  and had a solid rookie year. when he got to Pittsburgh he got hurt. He tore up the Venezuealan league this winter, which we all know is equivalent to big league baseball about as much as Rosie O'Donnell is equivalent to Angelina Jolie, but still...the guy can hit and who knows what can happen. Guys come out of nowhere every year around the league, he could be one of them this year.

Headley to the minors for more playing time...hate the reason for not letting an up and comer play.  The outfield is old and Edmonds might not even get us 75 games.  I think that maybe Mr. Moores could of  shelled out some cash for Andrew Jones.  The pitching again will have to pull the load for this team.  Gotta Believe!!

Do you think Justin Huber will get some outfield time? I was kind of hoping the Padres would have looked into picking up Shannon Stewart at the end of spring training
