[quote}I know I am going to get ripped by SEC fans for this but I had to say something.[/quote]
No, not ripped, but seriously, what's up with the whining and BS? Why shouldn't UGA get some love? We already know they had a solid season last year. We know all about their scheduling, win streak and returning starters. We know about their recruiting classes and their successes.... add all these up and you get a pretty good argument for UGA "getting some love" by the media.
While you were too busy being blinded by your own love for your buckeyes since their somewhat recent NC, you did not realize UGA has not been given any love by the media outlets, especially on the level it seems to be on now. This is a first in a long time, and deservedly so, if you ask me, and that goes both ways. (Didn't deserve the attention before but do now.) In case you don't keep up with UGA football, which I am sure you have not, what you have failed to see is what Coach Mark Richt (CMR) has created over his time at UGA. It has become a winning and solid football program that puts growing into a man on the same level as growing into the best football player he and the coaches can make them. He is a God loving man and believes in his faith and this is one subject that often gets a lot of comments from the players as a positive reason as why they like CMR and are willing to do whatever necessary to be a part of his team.
As for some specifics, UGA's 2008 team is comprised of a youthful team with very few starting seniors with a majority of sophomores and juniors rotating constantly, on both sides of the ball.
Matt Stafford- often over looked because his stats aren't the huge numbers most expect from a winning QB. But if one delved into the why behind they would see it was partially due to youth, playing as a true freshman and playing behind a OL that had to start three forms of freshmen, which doesn't help a young QB's stats, if you know what I mean. Over time, that line gelled and the results were obvious against great competition, Florida, Auburn, etc. where we were scoring 40 points on teams that weren't used to such. Stafford had a great blend of passing long and short and could depend on his receivers this past year where as the year before the WR had an awful time holding onto his ball. Stafford made huge strides in 2007 and with a more experienced OL this year, combined with the finding of a replacement for Velasco (our leader on the line last year) should be able to provide Matt with that much more time to do his magic, and that is lead.
Our OL... as already stated, young and up and coming. Big! Need to find a true leader from this group and hope he emerges on his own. Velasco from last year was a Godsend and he alone helped get the 2007 OL to step up and perform. We have plenty of talent coming in and young Ben Jones from Alabama might just be that man, but let us wait and see when he might get in. Across the line, UGA is pretty damn solid.
At RB....... hmmmmmm, what can I say? Knowsnon is not a one year wonder. He is a brilliant runner. Caleb King will be a great compliment. Dontavious Jackson and Richard Samuel are RB's you will be hearing about soon enough. We are very solid at RB talent, but also happen to be very youthful.... guess that is good for continuing our tradition of RB's though I know recently, that hasn't been the case.
WR's and TE- Solid. Have some great recruits coming in with a talented group already on board. Have to wait and see but very few teams use their TE and Fullbacks like UGA does. Our FB is well known for what he is capable of doing..... blocking, getting a first down on third and short or the necessary TD when sniffing the goal line, and oh yeah, he catches the ball out of the backfield.... or was I talking about our TE...... sometimes it is hard as UGA includes them both as an offensive weapon. Hell, UGA is TE U!!!! And UGAs FB's go on to play in the NFL just like the TE's.
Now about our D.....
I'll surmise, youth and talent is what this unit is all about. Last year, our coaches were desperately searching for the right combo of LB's as UGA lost all three to graduation. You don't think that is hard? Well, somewhere after the Tennessee game we found the right combination. Names you will know this year from our LB corp: Rennie Curran and Danelle Ellerbee along with Akem Hebron (making up for lost time), as well as Gamble and Dewberry.
Our secondary is young, young, young but blessed with great talent. You will learn all about Georgia's secondary Reshad Jones, C J Byrd and Quintin Banks. They have tons of talent and are players, you will see as time will tell.
Our D Line has some speed, beef and talent. Roderick Battle and Jarius Wynn are battling it out to take over for the departed Marcus Howard, a one year starter but made a name for himself. Why? Because that is the type of talent UGA has behind its starters. Hell, Knowshon was a number three RB and he looks pretty good.
I have rambled enough. I do not know what all I have attempted to say, where I lost track and went off on a tangent, or if I said anything at all, but I wanted to attempt to explain why UGA should get some love. Overall, we are a young, yet experienced team with depth. We have a third year starter at QB with all the talent in the world (whether you accept that as fact or not), an offense with talent deep at the RB, WR, TE and FB. Our D is solid with talent throughout and have a feeling this could be one of our best units in awhile (this year or next). CMR knows how to coach and if he and the coaches can keep this team healthy, focused and prepared, there is no telling what this team can accomplish, even with that schedule. UGHHHHHH!!!! I know it will be difficult but I look forward to seeing what team this group of men gels into for this upcoming season. I only hope we do ourselves proudly and that the players leave it on the field, no matter the outcome.
God bless Georgia and as always, How 'Bout Them DAWGS!!!!
