Congratulations to the 16 competitors remaining in the Member Mayhem field!

In this round, members will have a maximum of 250 words for their essays. The question: Which player has been the most valuable to his team during the 2008 NCAA season? (Keep in mind, this player does not have to be on the team you represent.)

Essays are due at 4 p.m. on Friday, March 28. Once again, good luck to the remaining few!

Arizona's MVP: Wise, Hill, Budinger, or Bayless?

Due to an ineffective bench, the roles of four Arizona starters were grossly over-exaggerated, which created a debate over whom is the MVP for Arizona this year. Jordan Hill and Nic Wise were the epitome of this scenario. Both were solid players, and the team suffered without them as nobody effectively filled the fifth spot on the roster; However, being vital because there is no legitimate back-up at your position doesn’t make you the MVP.

A legitimate argument could be made for Chase Budinger. Budinger was a well rounded player that Arizona ran off screens the entire season. When he was aggressive Arizona was incredible. Unfortunately, Budinger had a downside: soft defense and he didn’t always show up to play. Budinger’s downside prevented him from being worthy of the team MVP.

The MVP for Arizona this year is clearly Jerryd Bayless. He’s a well rounded player with everything you want in your star. He got teammates involved (4.1 apg), could score from anywhere on the floor (19.7ppg, 45.8% fg, 40.7% 3pt), and was always a threat. The greatest testament for Bayless isn’t with what he did, but what opponents did. Opponents would focus primarily on Bayless throwing junk defenses at him, putting their best defender on him regardless of other mismatches. Between opponents approach, and Bayless’ performances, and Arizona’s dismal 1-4 record without him, there is no doubt he was the team’s MVP.

At first I was not keen on naterb's response. It said that the starters of Arizona were over-exagerated because the team had no depth. As I read the essay though his point go through to me... Arizona is not deep, that makes what their starters did that much more special. Arizona did decent in the Pac-10 and made the tourney with only four guys, that makes those four, especially Bayless, priceless to the Arizona team. Great answer, I'll have to wait an hour or two before voting though, want to read the other essay, but I think your opponent might have been part of the 2nd round matchup where neither player posted an essay.

Hmm...I'm pretty sure I posted one last round...

Will be later tonight before I can put one up.  Was too slammed at work after a 3-day weekend to even attempt this.

Naterb, passable essay but I am kind of at a crossroads of words about the essay's set-up.
Most noticeably for me, was the fact that you only dedicated 100 words of the 250 words talking about your choice for your team's MVP, Jerryd Bayless. I don't really see the need for your four sentences about the first two MVP candidates to have been 75 words when you actually talk about Chase Budinger, your #2 choice. It may just be the way you set the essay up that makes the first four sentences seem expendable. I would have had like to see you take out the first four sentences and replace them with more detailed and less rushed feeling description of why Bayless was your MVP. I still gave you the vote due to the fact that I particularly liked the last two paragraphs. I hope you finish this match up the victor and move on the next round.

The folowing quote was discussed by the NESG'ers:

Unfortunately, as I understand now, it wasn't foul there is infact a night time underground on this message board.

A ceasing of hostilities with Nate is declared and we will not be involved as a group here.

Also: The "night time underground" tag went over very well. I believe that was the deciding factor.

Wayslow1 -

Congratulations on your getting engaged.  Should we congratulate the fiancee' also?  As you can see, the boards seem to operate on their own without your presence for a day or two.  Nice post in the last round (contrary to other thoughts on the matter) and squeaking out a victory with 78 total points.  Just get this one done, post it, and let the judges take care of the rest.  A solid post is what we have seen from you thus far, so get in and avoid the default.  I am holding back my 1 single, solitary, little vote until you get yours in.  Both of you are great posters, so I will resist the urge to go with the trend of voting for the lone poster present and weigh the merits of both side by side.

Basketball is not a one-man show. Even Michael Jordan at his prime could not face five quality competitors and beat them by himself. However, one man can be such an influence that he elevates his team to a level of competition they could not achieve without him. That ma
