Tyler Hansbrough of the North Carolina Tar Heels is the most valuable player to his team. He had seventeen double-doubles in 2007-2008, and an 81.4% free throw percentage, which is outstanding for a man of his size. (He also led the Heels in steals in 2007-2008 with 51). He is a player who believes in a strong work ethic. His passion is basketball, and he is a great leader. He is the first one to show up for practice and the last to leave. The real greatness in the elite players of this game lies in the fact that they ALWAYS feel that they have something they can improve on. Tyler never becomes full of himself, and he doesn’t put himself ahead of the rest of his team. Yes, Hansbrough is surrounded by some great talent, but he is the car that drives the team. He always gives 110% out on the basketball court. When Ty Lawson was injured, Hansbrough averaged 28 points and 12 rebounds per contest, a step up from already impressive line of 22 points and 10 rebounds that he averaged with Lawson in the lineup. He led his high school squad to consecutive State Championships as a junior and senior, and he has brought that same intensity to the Dean Smith Center in Chapel Hill. Hansbrough will most likely return to the Heels for his senior season, which can only make him better for a run in the NBA.

I can't pretend to know about teams that I haven't actually watched all year long, so I'll stick to what I know best. For that I need only a handful of words. Big XII, Kansas State , and Michael Beasley. When a person is asked the question "Which player has been most valuable to his team,” Michael Beasley has got to come into your mind if you know a lick about college hoops. Kansas State took a huge jump from a very mild contender last year to one of the elite in one of the best conferences this year. The freshman averages double-doubles with 27 points and 13 rebounds. Did I mention that he is versatile, because he can hit the 3's too. He only occasionally misses a free throw. He ranks 1 st in rebounding nationally and 3 rd in scoring nationally. Just look at the teams he's played all year long. Texas , Kansas twice, A&M twice, Oklahoma , Baylor, Notre Dame, Xavier , Oregon . One thing to say about that. Wow. Usually I believe that a team playing together and sharing the points, like my Texas A&M Aggies, is the type of team that will always do good, but Beasley lifted Kansas State to the Big Dance this year. He came to a weak and confused team, and said something to the emphasis of “I’m not taking any ___ from anyone” and started to win games for them. Beasley is the single most valuable player to his team in this 2008 NCAA season.

My vote is for Beasley hands down. Not only are Beasley's numbers better, but he also isn't play with a team full of McDonald All-American's. Tyler Hansbrough has teammates like Danny Green, Ty Lawson, Wayne Ellington. I mean come on dude, its hard for anyone to double down on Hansbrough because the rest of his team is also dangerous. Beasley actually had to work to get his points/rebounds. Hansbrough is an actor, he earns his points at the free throw lines. He won't get those calls at the next level in the NBA.
I know I know, this isn't about the NBA, Stephenson could be just as an effective big man for North Carolina as Hansbrough if he had the same PT.

I think that Tejano's piece was better written and made me respect Hansbrough more than I would have (since I am not a UNC fan at all.) However, I think Beasely made a much bigger impact to his team. UNC would be a first rate program with or without Hansbrough, KSU would be nothing without Beasley. I appreciate Hansbrough's dedication and the fact that he will likely be back next season makes him even more outstanding, but when you look at who has made the biggest impact to their team, you just can't argue the fact that Beasley took a supbar KSU team and turned them into contenders.

Fishstick, I appreciate your compliment and your constructive criticism, and I am not saying that Michael Beasley is not a great player. HOWEVER, it appears from these posts that people are penalizing Hansbrough for having talent around him. Are they implying that if Hansbrough were in Michael Beasley's shoes in KSU that he would not be the same? I just don't think that's fair to dismiss what he's doing just because he has talent around him. The Wildcats won 22 games last year. So it's not like Beasley led a complete turnaround...These are both fantastic players. And as you said, Hansbrough coming back next year speaks volumes about him. Yes, he wouldn't be a projected Top 5 pick, but it takes a lot to overlook a chance at the spotlight in the NBA.

I fully agree that Hansbrough is probably the best player in the nation. However, UNC without Hansbrough is still a probably #1 seed, maybe a #2 seed. Kansas State would be an NIT team without Beasley. The way I interpreted the question would make Beasley more important to his teams success. I guess I am penalizing Hansbrough for having such great talent around him, but this is about who is more vital to their team, not who is the best player.
If Hansbrough and Beasley were in opposite roles, if Beasley was at UNC and Hansbrough were at KSU, Hansbrough would be definitely be the guy to chose, but as I said, it's not a matter of who is the better player. I am not penalizing Hansbrough as a player, I am just downsizing his importance. He is an important player, I just don't feel that he is as vital to UNC's success as Beasley is to KSUs.
