No idea what's up with the multiple posting...anyway here's what I was going to say.

I'm going to name some names.  These guys have three things in common.  Think about what each one has in common.

Bryan Mullins

Brandon Johnson

Al Fisher

DJ Augustin

Jeremy Pargo

Jack McClinton

****SPOILER ALERT***** Do not read further unless you have thought about it

1.  They are all point guards

2.  They all like to penetrate

3.  They have all completely lit us up in our losses this season

We just cannot stop good physical guards from penetrating!  Tron Smith is the only guard that is physical enough to stop these guys, and he is one of the best 6th men in the mid majors, so why is he playing 11 minutes against Miami?  And, if you're not going to use him, then why not try and zone just a little bit to stop penetration?  I know Randy hates zone and loves man to man, and I understand the concept.  But you just cannot be that rigid!  St. Mary's does not adjust!  Other teams adjust to us because they figure this out.  But we don't adjust.

This has been a weakness all year, and I don't see us doing anything to combat this.  Just take a look at the stats:

Loss #1 Southern Ill- PG Byran Mullins  24pts

Loss #2 Texas- PG DJ Augustin  30pts

Loss #3 San Diego- PG Brandon Johnson 25 pts

Loss #4 Kent St.- PG Al Fisher 28 pts

Loss #5 Gonzaga- PG Jeremy Pargo 19 pts

Loss #6 San Diego- PG Brandon Johnson 28 pts

Loss #7 Miami- PG Jack McClinton 38 pts.

(I would also mention that despite winning the other Gonzaga game we got lit up by Pargo for 27)

See a pattern?  Again, I have to wonder why Tron gets only 11 mins against Miami.  Granted he is not a shutdown guard on D, but he's the only guy with the physical strength to stop these guys from penetrating.  How do we not adjust to this when we know it's a huge weakness?  All it takes is one look at these stats and I know it's something that needs to be addressed.

Hopefully Hunter & Chiverton will help out in this area next season.  But I agree, you still have to adjust defensively.  Man2Man 100% of the time works for teams like UNC & Kansas, but SMC doesn't get those types of athletes.  Adjustments are necessary for Mid-Major teams.
