Man! I wish I knew we were going to spend that kind of money! Don't get me wrong, Wainwright is an awesome pitcher with nasty funk. 14$ million though? Sabathia is out there still.....what do you guys think?
I agree that it was a good move by the Cardinals. This is what a lot of teams are doing these days--locking up their own players through their arbitration years. Wainwright and the team can now focus on what goes on between the lines rather than year-to-year contract wrangling.
Of course, no one can predict health, particularly with pitchers. Sometimes, though, it makes sense, with the right guy, to pony up the cash.
I'm not sure that $15million over 4 years is that much with 2 option years...at least in terms of today's baseball money. Sabathia is going to cost a heck of a lot more, that is for sure!! Wainwright will be the man this year, but he won't have to be next year when Carp is back from surgery. I think did the right thing locking Adam up.
At least the cards were finally willing to spend some money, err, i mean any money on pitching. Too bad it was on a guy already under contract! I agree it is a good idea to lock him up early but isn't this the same club that refused to give proven big league starters, i.e. Jeff Suppan, even ten million a year. I don't understand this teams thought process one bit, one second they are crying about payroll and the next second they are signing young pitchers that have won a whole whopping 15 games in there careers to mega-deals. I would love to see C.C. Sabathia with the birds on the bat across his chest but they do not have the prospects or the "payroll flexability" to pull it off. Apparently Loshe will sure up the rotation enough, and if another starter goes down we always have good old Jeff Weaver to pull back into the fold!
Go Cards!!!!!!!!!!!!(it is very hard to type sarcasticly)
I think it is a great move by the Cardinals but only time will tell. Wainwright has shown moments of being an ace. In regards to someone like Jeff Suppan, I think the Cards made the right move not to sign him for 10 million. He ended up 12-12 last year which isn't worth near 12 mil and his ST this year proves it even more with an ERA of 11+
I think it is a great siging. i agree that it is a steal for what pitchers are getting paid these days. 15 million over 4 years isnt alot. It average out less than 4 million a year and we gave Lohse 4.25 million and he is a uner .500 pitcher so we didnt over spend that is just an example. which i also liked the Lohse signing
My only reservation to this deal is not the money or the player involved, I think that both of those factors are great. Wainwright was and is one of the lone bright spots on our pitching staff and he deserves to be compensated as such. My thought process is that maybe there is something that they are not telling us about either Carpenter or Mulder and maybe their rehab isn't going as well as we had hoped. I mean, think about it, as little as a month ago, the Cards front office and Wainwright were no where close to reaching an agreement and some of the remarks from both sides seemed to indicate that Wainwright and the Cardinals were both starting to get frustrated with the manner in which things were going, and now suddenly they have a deal and both parties are happy?!? Something smells and I think it is coming from the owners box...
Without knowing a whole lot about the new GM I'm just gonna see what changes are made this offseason, during the year and next offseason before I make any judgements. At least we didn't lose Wainwright to another team.
that was a good move on the Cardinals part it was one of the only good moves they made this year im more worried about there outfield the starting pitching is actually good if everyone is healthy i mean u got wainright, carpenter, mulder, and dont forget about clement.
I definitely agree that that was an excellent move the Cardinals management. Desperate times call for desperate action. We needed to secure a quality pitcher bad so its good to know that we will have a stable, consistent, quality pitcher like Wainwright in the organization for many years to come.
I think that Wainwright is money well spent. The good news is we got him for that cheap. The could be a huge star for STL and to get him for that cheap was a steal. I think Sabathia will ask for way to much so it is money well spent.
