In case you've been living under a blanket the last few tournaments, there is a new kid on the block who has finally found his game.

Tsonga once again took the World's #2 to the edge, this time however he dropped the final set, in which he was up and serving for the match 7-5 in the final set.

If you didnt get to watch this match, it may have been the match of the year so far.  Tsonga and Nadal chased down ball after ball before finally someone either switch footing their opponent or going down the line for a winner.

In a match that showed emotion from both players, the new face of tennis may have been identified on this day.  Their 3rd clash in almost as many tournaments, this was by far their most spectacular display yet.

Tsonga is a character, a gamer and a warrior.  The same can be said for Rafa.  Both have a desire to become a #1 player in the world and BOTH have the game to do it.  Pounding forehands, 120+mph serves (Tsonga's is bigger), unquestioned athletic ability, great touch at the net and fire are what they share in common.

This to me was the match of the year at the Pacific Life Open.

I predict if healthy a top 5 finish from Tsonga this year.  He should crack the top 15 or so after this week and with a steady clay court season he should see his ranking head into the top 10 and a much smoother draw as the season progresses.

I competely agree with you.  He is very young, and now that he doesn't have any injuries he is iving up to his potential.  Nadal is an excellent player, and he beat him onceand nearly beat him again.  That realy says a lot

I predict Tsonga will not crack the top ten player level.  Tsonga is the typical French player, very showy, loud, a character, and wants entertain the crowd.   All of that takes energy all through the match, and that explains why Tsonga runs out of energy in the third set of his three set matches.  You can forget a five set match.  Therefore there will be no Grand Slams for they are all a five set format.

I agree that Tsonga's game is built too much around flair and not enough around basic tennis strokes. He has shown a tendency to be injury prone already and definitely does not have the typical physique associated with tennis longevity. He also has shown a tendency to tighten up on big occasions. He lost a match to a much lower ranked player  as a junior at The Orange Bowl that would have gotten him the number one junior ranking. Having said that, he does have a ton of talent and an all court game that very few of today's players can play with or against. If he hooks up with the right coach and gets serious about conditioning, I could see him doing like James Blake and making a run at the top five but not being able to sustain it for a long run. He can also get on a hot streak like this year and maybe win A Grand Slam. Reminds me too much of Safin. Always dangerous, rarely playing on Sundays.
