has decided to leave Cal and is looking to transfer somewhere? I haven't heard why or where he is looking to go. So the Cal offense takes another hit. I know a lot of people here liked Best and so do I but he is still injured and who knows how good he will be once he gets back.

I liked James Montgomery, and was expecting him to compete with Best for the starting position next year.  The one good thing that comes of this is that it gives an opportunity for Deboskie, Slocum, and Vareen to prove themselves.

Also, from the article in the paper this morning, it sounds like Washington is James Montgomery's top choice,

The Daily Californian said that he wanted to have the starting job, and he wasn't sure he could do that if competing with Best.  Tedford said he isn't too worried, because RB is an area in which Cal has depth, but I'm still kinda nervous.  If Jahvid's injury lingers, we may be in trouble!

James Montgomery's first choice may be Washington, but they are already using all their scholarships, so it may not be that easy.
More importantly, for the Bears, Montgomery was our most experience RB after Best, so it does hurt us there.  As far as talent level, I believe that Slocum, Vareen, and DeBoskie are as talented as Montgomery, so I don't expect a big dropoff.  Still, we've been doing a nice job of grooming RB's as backups and then having experience going into the season, and this year, unless Best is healthy, that isn't the case.
We're not  "in trouble", we're just not as sure as to who is going to be "the man".

I liked Montgomery too. If he wants to leave because he thinks he will start somewhere else (although I think he may have to sit for a year) I can respect that. However to me that shows he did not belong at Cal. Apparently he learned nothing from Forsett who spent 2 years as a backup and still got 1,000 yards in a season as a backup (ok 999). Tedford likes to rotate backs, and even if Best were to be deemed the "starter" Montgomery would have got his touches. Tedford likes team players, and to me Montgomery's move shows that he in not a team player.

Well, we'll all get to see him again, as he is going to WSU.
