I read today on CBS that Rasmus wasn't one of LaRussa's favorites this spring, and that perhaps the kid was already (somehow) in his manager's doghouse.
Has anyone else heard anything like this? I was wondering why he hadn't seen many ab's of late.

I haven't heard anything about that and I wouldn't read too much into it. Rasmus was pretty well ticketed for AAA to start the season, the way I've seen it. Give him, at minimum, half a season in AAA. It can only help down the road.
We've got a bunch of good OFers, and it just doesn't make sense to start Rasmus with the big club. His time will come.

I totally agree that from both financial and developmental perspectives it makes much more sense to start him in AAA. I'm excited to see what he's capable of (like all Cards fans are I'm sure), but in the interim I'll enjoy watching Ankiel and Barton get their AB's. I was just wondering what he could have possibly done to irk his manager already - was surprised to read that on his player profile page.
You're probably right though - most likely a non-story.

If Duncan is on the opening day roster and Rasmus or anybody else batting their weight (or above) is not, charges of racism will be flying all season. Of course it won't be a matter of racism. It is a matter of nepotism.
This is gonna get ugly, I'm afraid. Of course if we're winning nobody in Cardinal nation will care. But if we're losing with Duncan on the roster, hitting less than .100, Tony and Dave Duncan will get fired, I'm guessing. pipe

Yeah, I don't like Duncan (never have) starting in their OF one bit. He's just not a major league starter. He's a nice lh power bat off the bench, and can spell the corner OF postions, and Albert at first now and then. Why does LaRussa insist on sticking him out there every day (I guess we kind of know the answer to that)? I don't care how much he's improved, he'll always be a below average defensive player. I guess we take a month or two of him, and then give the keys to Rasmus.
I honestly don't mind starting Barton, Rasmus and Ankiel from left to right. I hope that's our OF by the break. We need to see exactly what it is we have, and if any (or hopefully all) of these kids can be long term table setters / protection for Albert in the Cards lineup.

Pipe. I don't think LaRussa or Duncan will get fired if they keep Duncan in the lineup. The whole thing is if Albet Pujols can stay healthy as what to do with Duncan. That also being Duncan keeps hitting the way he is. Rasmus needs to work a little more down in the system. I know the AAA team will be something amazing this year, shoot, may even be better then the actual Cardinals. He just needs to keep playing for a paycheck, Rasmus that is. I think he is something special, even if it means we need to trade him to help our team now. There will be talks about Duncan if this goes sour, but I really doubt this will escalate into anything other then a bad day at work for both employees. Duncan should be left down in AAA too though, I mean .063? I think? I could do better that for $1000 a week!
Nice nepotism call to pipe. I liked that one.

I think you guys are placing way too much emphasis on Duncan's spring numbers. If you ask me, he's proven himself statistically over the last two seasons... and regular season numbers are a whole lot more important than Grapefruit League numbers.

While I think our friend from MARS has a point, I do not think that presenting it while using the likes of Chris Duncan, is a wise move. Duncan has underperformed, consistently been injured, and been a defensive liability since he came into the bigs and that has not changed. With that being said, I do think that Spring Training is just that, training...It is a time for preparation and refocusing, and I do not think that a player should be able to play his way OFF of the team during that time period. I do think that it is a very good indicator for the younger guys on who could be on their way up, but a player who was and is good enough for you to have them on your roster and start the year before should in no way loose their spot on the roster due to their ST performance (maybe send them to the bench but not to the minors)! I wish TLR would see that he is not doing the kid any favors by continuing to put him out there in LF basically on an island where all of the world can watch as his confidence shrinks by the second...Trade him to an American League team so that he can do what he does best (if there is such a thing) by allowing him to DH and only have to hit. This would help Duncan out, the team out, and would not create the distraction and conflict that sending him to the minors would. Tony has problems with enough people that he does not need to add his pitching coach to the list that already contains names like Rolen, Pujols, front office personnel, and now rumor has it Rasmus...

Yeah, don't confuse what I'm saying regarding Duncan. I'm not ragging on his spring numbers. I agree that it's just spring training (tell that to Rickie Weeks). My problem with Duncan is he's a terrible fielder who strikes out waaay too much. I just don't think he's an everyday player at the major league level.
That being said, I do understand the reason for Rasmus starting the season in AAA, but he needs to be brought up much sooner than later. He has ten times the glove as Duncan does now, plus speed which we certainly could use. I mean, how much worse could his hitting be at this point?
But back to my point concerning his glove/defense. This staff is going to need all the defense behind them that they can get, and having Duncan thundering around LF is not the way you help your pitchers.

Sorry about that. Very touchy computer server here, lol. Anyway, if we're winning, they can put Lindsay Lohan, Paris Hilton, and Britney Spears in the lineup, (With or without panties, lol) and nobody would care.
But if you are losing, every roster move is scrutinized to see if you are really trying to improve the club.
You gotta guy like Looper who gives up about 8 hits in 6 2/3 innings, how many fourth outs are you gonna give the other team and still expect to win 60% of the time? pipe

I have read or heard nothing about Rasmus and TLR fueding??? I think that Colby was headed to AAA no matter what kind of spring he had, especially with Brian Barton and Skip Schumaker having the spring they are. Give Rasmus until July or so and I see him coming up. The Cards OF is young, but I look forward to this year to see what they can all do...not to mention the coming years...Ankiel, Rasmus, Barton, Mather, Duncan, Schumaker and even Ludwick. The Cards may not win the WS this year, but I am very happy to see them going young and building for the future. The next news I hope to hear out of the StL outfield is that Juan Gonzalez has been released.

Just curious. Why is TLR the only coach that seems to have personal issues with his players. Do you guys think the media is kind of making that stuff up because they understand why certain decisions are made or is TLR really that hard to get along with?

This is cut and pasted off of Rasmus' player profile page on CBS Sportsline (in regards to his being sent to AAA)...
"Rasmus wasn't a favorite of manager Tony La Russa this spring, a manager who is known to have his doghouses set up. The 21-year-old remains a 30-30 prospect worth considering in all long-term keeper leagues, but he will get a least a month or two in the minors before he is considered for a big league call-up at this point."

So let me get this straight..
Anthony Reyes pitches 6 shutout innings, 3 hitter two days ago. And gets sent down. It is no secret he had an off year last year, but yes the 2006 WS Game 1 winner is going to the minor leagues. The rumor is that he hasn't got along with Tony and wants to do his own thing (use his own stuff, not Duncan's). So he gets demoted. Scott Rolen, who is a pretty good guy is now gone because of a relationship with Tony LaRussa (Mr. DUI). Say what you want about Rolen playing hurt, this and that. Isn't that what Albert Pujols is doing now? Playing hurt?
And think about this.... Dan Haren was here in 2006 and we did not even start him once in the playoffs, and then he goes on to success in the AL!???? He dominates the AL!!!!!! Haren could not only pitch, but the kid could hit too! But we had to get the older guy from California (Mark Mulder).
Be lucky we didn't trade Reyes and hope that Jose Oquendo gets the reigns soon! Maybe Colby Rasmus is friends with Reyes? And so the feud go on. Sooner or later people are going to see that LaRussa is the problem. He can coach, but not younger players. His teams have all had veterans.
Something is not right.
