I am going to Tampa, but do not have a dog, er, I should say, Cat (Bearcat) in the fight, so I would be interested in opinions of fans of the above teams on these match-ups. Personally, I think I'm going to see 3 really good games in this "pod."

Nova is definitely capable of beating Clemson. I saw Scotty Reynolds play at Cincinnati and he was fabulous. I'm not sure if one of these teams has a matchup advantage or not. Did Clemson miss a lot of free throws the last few games or am I confusing them with another team? That can be deadly in the tournament. 5-12 games are notorious for upsets.

I know Vandy is good (so does UK...Ouch!). I'm looking forward to seeing some very good fundamental basketball and good 3 pt shooting. I heard on TV that Sienna beat Stanford this year, so they can't be that bad.

Any thoughts - Clemson, Nova, Vandy, Siena fans.

(Actually, as a Big East fan, I'll be rooting for Nova, but basically hoping for some good competitive basketball.)

I am a g'town fan, but live minutes from Siena, and that is true they did beat Stamford this year.  And I think they will give Vandy a fight, and maybe even beat them

They are a young, athletic, fundemental team.  They do not turn the ball over.

Ubiles, hasbrouck, and Franklin all average over 15 points.

No matter what they do this year look out for them next year, they return all there main players besides Fischer.

well have fun and jump on the Siena bandwagon, and like you I root for the BE, but if Siena and Nova play in the second round I will be wearing my green and gold...

I agree that Nova is definitely capable of beating Clemson as long as they keep enough guys that can handle the ball on the court at the same time to deal with Clemson's strong pressure. Clemson's free throw issues could come back to hurt them, especially considering Nova does foul a lot. Clemson's scoring is balanced, but Nova has seen multiple players step up in the past few games including Stokes, Anderson, Cunningham, and Pena to complement the scoring of Scottie Reynolds. As seen in the 2nd half of Nova's BET game against Syracuse, if the outside shots are falling (leading to confidence on O and more intensity on D), this Nova team has the talent to compete with most teams. My prediction: as much as I don't want to say it, I think Clemson will sneak by.

I too am a Big East fan, having grown up in the Syracuse area they have always been my team.  However I went to Siena and still follow their program pretty closely as well.   This years team is not one to sleep on.  They were the pre-season pick to win the MAAC and won the regular season title and conference tournament.
This team is young true, they have only one senior on the roster, but these kids can play.  They did beat Stanford early in the year when they were ranked #20 in the country.  They played very well against Syracuse in the dome looking to have a shot at a win with under 2:00 to go.  And also pounded on Boise St. in an espn bracketbusters game a couple weeks ago.  Their great play continued into the MAAC tournament, sweeping three games on their home court in Albany.  They came back from 17 down in the semis then crushed Rider in the finals with absolutely stifling defense, holding them to only 53 points (more than 20 below their season average).  Another thing about this team is they don't turn the ball over.  The Saints averaged only 11 to/g on the season and only 9 to/g through the conference tournament.

The MAAC is a three guard offense conference.  With many teams lacking a true center.  That being said, Josh Duell showed that he can defend the post with the best of them in the MAAC title game against NBA prospect Jason Thompson of Rider.  There are three players averaing over 15 ppg this season and on any night any of these three can drop 30 on you.  They're "up" defense creates turnovers and more importantly creates transition buckets.

This team is young, they can run, they can shoot, they can defend, they don't turn the ball over, and they're confident.  This team has all the makings of a Cinderella team.  Will they beat Vandy? I honestly think they can, but we'll have to wait and see.  Will they make it to the sweet 16? Probably not.  But this team should make some noise and are set up to be back in the mix again next year (losing only Fisher to graduation).  You may have never heard of Siena but I guarantee after watching this team play you won't forget our name any time soon.....GO SAINTS!!!

Villanova is young and has lapses where they just can't score.   Can't let them get ahead and hit their stride or they are dangerous.

They  got off hot against West Virgina and it was never close.

Also the LSU game should scare Clemson fans.  Villanova was don, down 17 with 6 1/2 minutes left and started fouling.   LSU kept missing and Nova got its shooting legs and made super comeback.   They ain't big but they rebound surprisingly well.

I love the enthusiasm from the Siena fans!  Good to see some people out there actually know about the Saints.

As said previously in the very detailed posts above, the Saints are a young, athletic team that likes to push the ball, create turnovers and play good defense (they ended the season number 11 in the country in steals and steals per game).  They have three stars in Hasbrouck, Ubiles and Franklin who can each carry the team on any given night.  Tay Fisher off the bench is a 3-point specialist who can get hot and rattle off 6 or 7 treys on any given night as he did in the MAAC Championship game.  Ronald Moore is a very solid point guard who rarely turns the ball over and manages the offense, particularly in transition, very well.

Siena also creates a couple of match-up problems for many teams.  Edwin Ubiles is listed as at 6'6" but can shoot from anywhere on the floor.  He led the MAAC in 3-point percentage, and with his combination of size, agility and range, he's a difficult assignment.

Josh Duell is a forward who typically draws the center as his defensive assignment.  Although he's only listed as 6'7", he has the size to body most big men (as he did against likely NBA lottery pick Jason Thompson in the MAAC Championship game) but also is able to draw his defender away from the basket as he is a solid player away from the paint and can shoot the three.

If I had to describe Siena's biggest weakness it would be their size / rebounding.  Their best rebounder, Alex Franklin, was hurt for a stretch in the middle of the season but he's back to playing his best basketball - averaging better than 10 rebounds per game in his last 10 games.  The Saints often counter this deficiency with quickness and shooting ability.  Fortunately, Vandy is a fairly weak rebounding team so their lack of size shouldn't be exploited too badly.

Siena is a dangerous team as a 13 seed, and I think they match up well against a very good but very streaky Vandy team.  With a couple of tough losses in the closing minutes to Syracuse, Cornell and St. Joe's, Siena was a couple games from being an 11 or 12 seed.  Still, they're a very good team that will give Vanderbuilt all than can handle.  You should be in for a great game.

Oh my!  Everyone left and right is picking against the Commodores of Vanderbilt - my alma mater.  Yes, I'm bias and don't apologize for it.  I can't speak for the other teams but you will get a well coached, prepared tough team in Vanderbilt.  I don't know why there is no love for VU - I'm happy for the Saints too but come down off the cloud.  Vanderbilt is not just All-American/SEC Player of the Year Shan Foster; there is a multitude of talent around him.  Clemson is the team I'm watching in this 'pod' frankly.  But if you do have any doubts about penciling in Siena, just remember Vanderbilt vs. UT, UK, Mississippi State, .... You can acknowledge the excellence at Siena but still pick Vanderbilt!  GO DORES!

I have got to go .  Clemson too much pressure for anyone in that bracket!!  Would love to see a 4th Clemson vs UNC game!!!  They blew two games against the Tarheels (who I pick to take it all).  I just hate seeing Clemson facing a 12 - a sure jinx!!  Go Tigers!!!

I'm about to drive over to Tampa. Both games should be excellent. Everyone is picking the Siena over Vandy upset. I've heard how Siena plays a tight defense which might disrupt the Dores 3 points shooting. Shan Foster needs 4 points for 2000 career. Nova and Clemson should be a great game also, don't know much about either team, but I've seen both Clemson-UNC games and that made me think Clemson was a pretty ligit team. So I picked Clemson.
