Why do players always make excuses after they lose?
Serena always has an injury after she loses and now Roger has mono. When are people just going to man up and say they lost.

roger has always manned up and given credit to his opponents whenever he loses. I wouldnt be so quick to throw him into a category as Serena who has an excuse EVERYTIME she loses. You have to admit he didnt look like himself and was a little sluggish. Now if he keeps making excuses then I will agree and will actually lose respect for him.

I agree Roger has never made excuses before. I think the mono is legit, i just think that his camp should have made him get checked out quicker because i bet he has been complaining of being tired for awhile now. His camp as well as Roger just probably thought he was training to much and cut down on that rather then getting checked.. stupid move as it turns out but at least he doesnt really ahve to focus on things until the Masters series rolls around because he knows what the result will be at the french... he'll make the finals and then get crushed by nadal who is the best player on Clay period. So he'll have plenty of time to relax if he wishes to.

I'm on the fence about Federer and whether or not he gives credit to his opponent. He has always struck me as being somewhat arrogant. Heres an example:

He lost to Andy Murray (he's 1-2 against Murray) last week and instead of saying Murray played a good match, he pretty much talked about how Murray hasn't changed his game in two years, plays too far behind the baseline, and how he gave Murray the mistakes he needed to win.

Not exactly being complimentary of the guy who just beat him the second straight time they've played, is it? Obviously, playing far behind the base line against Federer is working well for Murray, so why is Fed criticizing him?

I agree about Serena but I think she is catching on to her poor post match interview showings. Roger, on the other hand, has been a class act.  After losing to Djokovic in Australia he didnt make any excuses.  He didnt talk about his virus which made him drop out of the previous tournament.  He didnt talk about missed preparation.  He had just missed his first Slam final in almost 3 years and he said he played pretty well and there was nothing wrong with making it to the semis in a tournament like that.  When he lost to Canas and Nalbandian twice each last year he didnt say anything about fatigue.  I did notice what he said about Murray and I thought it was not his typical post loss interview.  Hey!  How can a guy who wins that much be good at post loss interviews?  I hope he loses more often cuz it will make the tournaments more interesting.  But I do respect his ability and that he is one classy guy.

When this story about Roger's mono came out, through his agent no dount, I posted the fact that it was a bad PR move.  I think Roger is the best all time, and definitely the best of the contemporary players, but the mono card wont play well with his fellow players.  I hope he wins the French, Wimbledon, and U.S. Open so we can continue to watch the making of history.

I don't think Roger makes excuses, I just think he is brutally honest.  For instance, when he talks about the loss to Murray, he pretty much says that he played really bad, and that is why he lost (which is true).  Nevertheless, he has given credit to players that have beaten him, in which he flat out says that player was the better man that day (such as Nadal or Djokovic).  I can see where somebody may take it as an excuse or arrogance, I just see it as him calling it like it is.  He knows he is the best in the world and when he is not at his best it must be frustrating to lose.  Yet I think he has been a class act about it for the most part.

Maybe you should read the entire interview and not only what some media served in front of you. My reaction was the same as yours before I read the entire interview but once I read t he whole interview it made more sense knowing what Roger is all about. He's the best and maybe he sometimes sounds too confident but let's be honest, he always respects every player. Even Murray but again, you need to read the entire interview. I wouldn't consider Roger's opinion of Murray's game a criticism. Yes, Roger lost and Murray's (not so attractive) strategy paid off. From the fans' prospective, they want to watch the game because they want to be entertained. I think boring strategy isn't that entertaining to watch but if it works for a player on the court so be it. I'd rather be watching retired Sampras, Agassi and Rafter than some of the today's top 10 players.
As far as Murray goes ... he is not known as a well liked player in the locker room because of his ... arrogance. As he got a little older and more mature he realized that he needs to adjust his behavior and now he gives a little more respect to others.

Serena has written the book on excuses for why you couldn't win.

She always sick, hurt or just not mentally focused.  Yet when she is winning, there is never anything at all wrong with her.  It just seems to me that she finds reasons to avoid her own mishaps on and off the court.

Serena's best quote was "If Im healthy Im the #1 player in the world".

So far the only thing Serena has going for her is power and the ability on any given day to outplay anyone on the tour.  She is a great player, but she just hasn't been playing enough to consider herself the best anymore.

The "best" requires that you are there to perform, defend and obtain new heights within your own career.

As far as Federer is concerned.  He is a great player, but he doesn't give the credit to the guys who play him tough or beat him.  Mono was a bad PR move, but he came into this last tournament "over it and ready to go"....yet he is ousted in round 1 to Andy Murray.

No, Murray doesn't play a typical source of tennis, but Federer is starting to lose more often, especially when all the younger players he was dominating two years ago are getting their cracks at him again (ala, Murray & Djokovic).

I agree that Serena is not your most gracious loser. I would have to disagree about Fed man. He seems to give some credit while maintaining his position of confidence and being unbeatable. Being beaten my Marty Fish yesterday however, seems to indicate that he will be less successful during 2008. What do you think?
