I'm not sure it as easy as "east coast" bias. It is hard to argue USC gets no respect, nor UCLA if they are good. Go over a time zone and you have Oklahoma, Texas and Nebraska who are up there on any "traditional" football power house list. Teams like Colorado and Washington also get attention when they are good. Even more middle level (in terms of national exposure, not talent) teams like Oregon, BYU, Texas A&M, Cal and Kansas State get plenty of national attention when they have good teams. Even short term, non eastern teams, like Missouri (you could argue and eastern team), Kansas, and Fresno State get national exposure when they are having good years. I think national respect comes from multiple years with multiple bowls and wins over other "national" teams. Winning seasons (9 and 10 or more wins) year after year with "name" teams, are what is important. This is why I don't like when PSU puts Coastal Carolina or Youngstown State on the schedule. It is also why I'm looking forward to the upcoming series with Alabama and Nebraska. I would be just as happy with a multi year series with USC or UCLA, again from the national perspective. I do believe the time difference has some negative effect, I'm just not sure how much.
