The simple truth is, the Players Union has designed a structure where these players don't make money in the first 3 years. Players have to prove themselves before they get a big time paycheck.
But let's say we do sign Hamels to a 7 year $70 milion and he turns into Prior or Wood? Then you have a rubber armed player with so much "potential" who is never on the field. The Phils need to protect themselves. I don't want to even imagine this situation because everyone and their mother will be on this board saying 5 years from now... "I can't believe we are still paying Hamels who can't stay healthy."
Players have to pay their dues and the money will come. Wang is a better pitcher and has proven that a little patience will pay off.

this is what happens to EVERY major league baseball player who has come up in the last 20 years. the team owns your rights for the first years and you are paid accordingly; meaning that since you have done very little at the major league level and have very little service time, you arent paid much. teams dont have to worry about losing you until you become free agent eligible. this is a good system for the most part. otherwise, players with a decent rookie season would suddenly command $7 million a year, without having earned it. if you play well during your initial seasons, the team still has the option of signing you to a long-term contract if it wishes, but it is not obligated to pay you the major league standard salary until you have accrued a certain amount of major league service time.
as for the complaints that Wes Helms, Adam Eaton, etc. earn so much more than hammels does, they don't make sense. those players are paid so much more because they were free agents. when hammels becomes a free agent he will earn a lot more than either of them. when those two had no control over their own contract status, they were paid near the minimum just like hammels is now. compare hammels to other players in the same situation, and he is doing just fine. Prince Fielder, cory hart, bj upton (who actually had his salary reduced this year), Hanley Ramirez, etc. are all making near the minimum as well, even though they have done as much or more to prove themselves than hammels has. thats how the system works. it's just strange that this year in particular there are so many players lashing out about it. they need to shut their mouths and play, and earn their paychecks like everyone before them.

GREEDY?
He is the ACE on a team that plays Baseball in a sandbox,
Put Howard,ROLLINS,or Utley on a REAL MLB team in a real ballbark and see thier true stats drop.
With that said I would love to have Hamels join the best pitcher Santana,in the best city NEWYORK,and on the best MLB team Mets.
Tell your owner stop pocketing the money and pay his stars before your Phils go back to the basement
GO METS.

That's amusing. What about their stats would drop? Howard hits more HR's outside of Citizens Bank Park then in it...so that's pretty much a nil. Utley? His HR's might drop, that's ok...more extra base hits, more doubles...more runs...he'll still produce like the best 2nd baseman in the league...and Rollins? Hmmm, more space to hits the balls...so less HR's and more doubles, triples, and inside-the-park HR's...so really, what stats would drop and how much would it really matter? Who cares...because you're an idiot.

He is the ACE on a team that plays Baseball in a sandboxWhat is it with Mets fans and the term "sandbox"?? I've seen multiple Met fans use this term, so I know it's not a typo or misspelling or anything like that. Do Met fans still like to play in sandboxes? Do you get all teary-eyed thinking back to your childhood when you would play in a sandbox? Did you keep your little shovel and pail? Or is there a more freakish reason that involves kitty litter boxes? Those are the only explanations I can see, since if you were talking about a hitter-friendly ballpark, you would know the actual term is "bandbox". Please get it right next time.. and pass it along to your friends- sorry, wrong term.. your fellow fans.

I doubt he will even have a career as long as his contract. He just has a really bad body type that never seems to hold up for a pitcher. He will be good for maybe 4 more years and then die down because his body isnt fit for baseball if he works as much as his contract is worth if he gets what he is suggesting on his contract.

But i understand if you couldnt get the joke or comparison...because you're from philly.A.) That's because there was no joke, or a comparison.
B.) No, I'm not from Philly.
We call it a sandbox, because thats what the lil kids play in...ever heard of the movie the sandlot? So actually we're comparing ur stadium to the ones the little league players play in.Nice try, Moses.. but you're only making yourself look more stupid by trying to explain "sandbox" then by you Met fans using the term in the first place. You go from sandbox to sandlot when those two things have nothing in common other than beginning with "sand". And then jump from sandlot, to little league parks.. which aren't sandlots, or sandboxes, they're just smaller sized because smaller sized people, with smaller abilities, play in them. But you didn't call Citizen's Bank Park a little league park, or a sandlot.. but instead you call it a sandbox.. yeah, that's real genius there. Let's not use the terms that actually have to do with smaller areas that people play baseball in, that have a relevant meaning to taking a shot at a hitter-friendly major league park.. let's instead use something that has nothing at all to do with baseball, or the size of the parks, or anything else.. we'll call it a sandbox!
Find your shovel and pail, and try building yourself a sandcastle, and get over your sandbox fixation.
