They're making plenty of money with the new park filled just about every night.
Why go down this road with Hamels? Would it have really killed their bottom line to throw him an extra $100K or $200K? That's chump change by today's standards and would've gone a long way toward keeping the kid happy until he gets to arbitration and free agency after that.
According to 610's Howard Eskin, the Phils made him an offer that would've paid him more than the $500K he's getting for this season. But, instead of giving him what they had offered, as did the Brewers with Prince Fielder, they gave him less.
