Been having some debates on a few threads about the saying "I support the troops but not the war" that many liberals use.  I personally think its is a B.S. statement and they don't support the troops.  Many soldiers I know feel the same way.  What do ya'll think?

I've seen plenty of churches and religious groups actually go and ruin funerals of soldiers that died in Iraq.

I support the soldiers because in my maintenance shop, 6 of my co-workers are over there right now maintaining the C-130's.

Can't tell you if I support the war or not.

I'm in the military and currently attend school in Kansas and will probably be back in Iraq when I graduate in a couple of months.  I have also been deployed to both Iraq and Afghanistan and sometimes it does feel as if the populace does not support us.  While many say that they are against the war but support the military, their actions really don't fit.  Having lived in California for 2 years, I saw first hand how some really feel.  I have not seen, but have heard of people attempting to disrupt funerals and things like that.  I feel that those people do not represent a majority of the population.  There are many times walking through airports and going to the store in uniform that people have stopped me and said thank you.  I have also seen people traveling down the road when a military funeral procession was passing  and get out of their cars to watch and pay tribute.  I really think that it depends on the part of the country that you are in as to whether the populace does truly support the military.

They all sing the same sour notes, e.g. "Protesting this criminal war that George W. Bush hatched to steal the Iraqi people's oil is how I show my patriotism."  They're just Blame-America-First types who dress up in the word patriotism but are only nauseated by the true meaning of the word.  A la Barack Obama refusing to wear an American flag lapel pin, deriding those who do as being hollow patriots.  This guy's growing success is like a long, slow bad dream.  He might just pull it off.  If he does we'll long for the good old days of Clinton.

I get really frustrated with people that have never served a day and think they know what is best for us.  Then there are the hypocrits like the city counsel and mayor of Berkeley who say they support the troops at the same time they say the marine recruiters are unwanted interlopers and allow code pink special privelages to protest against them.

I joined the Navy in 1990 and served during the 1st Gulf War, back then it was "convenient" for people to support the troops...we won a historic victory while suffering almost no casualties on the battlefield.

not so anymore; people think they are being patriotic if they say "we support the troops" regardless of whether or not they understand what it means to serve.

I have more respect for those I see in uniform today than I did when I was on active duty. Especially those of lower enlisted ranks who obviously enlisted after 2003; whenever I am at a restaurant and see a service-member in uniform I always offer to buy them a drink or pay for their meal, although I think it embarrasses some of them...it is just my way of showing respect for the individual choice he or she made to serve our country.

I have never met a "liberal" who understood the self-sacrifice required to serve the counrty...they all thought soldiers were "stupid" and joined the Army or Marines because they were unable to get better jobs...they had no concept of Honor or Duty.

Being a former Sailor, I often make jokes at the expense of the other Armed Forces; but I do take offense when anyone who never served does the same...I guess it is a "I can make fun of my brother but if you do it I will kick your ass" mentality...

I'm a veteran.  I was drafted very much against my will in the closing days of the Viet Nam war.   I spent twelve months of my life stationed in South Korea.  I served when I was called on to serve, and I was honorably discharged.  I consider myself as patriotic an American as anyone...and I have paid my dues.

I was adamantly opposed to our involvement in Viet Nam, as I have been opposed from the very beginnning to our involvement in Iraq.  But, I believe we OWE our military personnel our support, even if our personal beliefs don't mesh with how we view the policies of our government.  Yes, you can support our troops and be opposed to the war.  Those of you who don't understand that don't understand some of the basic fundamentals that this country was built on.
