I would say keep going Ty, he left under bad circumstances. He would probably think he's worth top 5 CB money and he's been going down hill since he left the Patriots. I would take him back as a safety but not cornerback.

Huh...well, I agree, but it would still be cool to have him back.

As someone pointed out earlier, Ty Law did in fact leave under BAD circumstances... if memory serves me correctly, he basically called B.B. a liar.  However, not long thereafter he came out and apologized and said he didn't have a grudge.

The bottom line is this:  Besides Ellis Hobbs, the Patriots basically have either young unproven players or FA (unproven) additions at the CB position.  Plus, the fact that they didn't draft a safety makes it look like Brandon Meriweather won't be moving to CB.  People are saying good things about FA acquisition Fernando Bryant from the Lions, and it looks as if the Patriots are planning on having the CB they drafted out of Colorado move into a starting spot at some point in the future.  So, could we benefit from having an aging but smart vet who is familiar with the scheme in the backfield?  YES.  If Law is willing to sign for a veterman minimum with maybe a few incentives thrown in, I say YES, BY ALL MEANS, SIGN HIM.

That whole scenario with Ty Law's departure was overdone.  Yes, he said a few things he regretted and apologized for.  Since then he's approached the Patriots about returning, and the Patriots seem open to it, so we can cross that out as an issue.

The evaluation of the Patriots secondary is indeed correct.  There is Ellis Hobbs at CB, then they're good at Safety with Rodney Harrison, James Sanders, and Brandon Meriweather.  (I don't think Meriweather will go to CB, by the way.)  At CB, then, there is Fernando Bryant, Terrance Wheatley, and Jonathan Wilhite, Jason Webster, and Mike Richardson.  Personally, I don't put alot of stock in Richardson's chances, nor anybody who might be under Jason Webster on the depth chart.

Ty provides a tremendous amount of experience and knowledge that frankly aids him in dealing with his reducing athleticism.  That's something that would help in this defense.

That said, the idea that he'll sign for the veteran minimum with incentives is unlikely.  He wants a final payday, not a huge one, but a payday nonetheless.  It will be interesting to see what he finally does sign for, and with whom.

Personally, like I said, I'd like to see him there.  I would love to see him helping the rookies along.  I'd like to see both Wheatley and Wilhite earn their way onto the squad.  Reports out of the rookie camp put Wilhite in good standing.  It would be nice to have a couple of young players making their way onto the group.

M.R.'s response to a Ty Law question in his weekly Mailbag:

What are the chances of the Patriots signing Ty Law?

A: Barney, I'd say the chances of Ty Law coming back to New England are growing slimmer by the day. Seems to me that what he's looking for, and what the Patriots are offering, are not aligned at this time. Also, the Patriots drafted two corners, so their depth chart is actually more stocked now than when they first spoke with Law. Perhaps that could change if there is an injury in training camp, but there is nothing stopping Law from signing now. Just a hunch, but I wouldn't be surprised if Law ended up in Cleveland.

Hmm...that quote is interesting, seeing as I've heard a lot of different things. If he ended up with Cleveland, that would be another once-Patriot player gone over to them (Willie McGinest being the other one). I would love to see him back, but whatever works well for him is fine. I hope he can retire with good team and not after a bad year. . .

(Willie McGinest being the other one).

Speaking of Willie, here's an article about him retiring after this year.  Click on the SI.com link for the actual article:

WILLIE McGINEST: ONE MORE YEAR: Former Patriots outside linebacker Willie McGinest tells SI.com this will be his final season. "This will be it," he says in the piece. "This will be my 15th season. I've worked hard; I think I've done everything I set out to accomplish. The hard work, sacrifice, dedication -- I committed myself to doing it the right way and playing it the right way. I've been blessed to play with some of the best players in the world and play against some of the best in the world. I think 15 years going strong I've held my own."

I read about that also, that this was his last season. I'll never forget that one statement he said after the AFC Champion game to the fans to cancel all those reservations! Man that was priceless. I don't remember which team it was that they played but I definitely remember the statement.

My best memory of Willie McGinest was when the Patriots played the Colts.  The Colts were on the one yard line.  First and goal, then second and goal, then third and goal.  Willie motored behind the line of scrimmage and stopped Rhodes for a loss on fourth and goal!  What a dominant goal line stand!

I hurt my toe jumping up after they made that stop.  What a game!

Man, I remember that game and play. That...was...awesome! He was amazing with the Pats and when he left, you could notice it. The 4th-down-goal-line-save play AGAINST the Colts (which made it all the more sweeter) was one of those incredible nail-biting plays that the Pats were famous for.

Funny you mention an injury when celebrating, because I did too! I slammed my hand into my coffee table while jumping up from the couch. Man, that hurt. . . .
