1. O-Line - without Scott, who started and ended up playing 4 positions on the line this is top need. Need starter at guard and depth
2. D-Line - Close second. Need DT that is good run stopper and has some size. Would be nice to have a star in the middle.
3. OLB - Session may step up, but already weak position has lost depth (morris & boiman)
4. CB - Struggled when in nickel situations. Must be taller than 5'8".

I agree with your list. It would be nice if the Colts addressed those two needs 1st. In the late rounds after addressing those needs, it would be nice to get the usual offensive lineman or two and a linebacker in the late rounds for depth. Backup TE could be a need too.

we need a guard to replace Scott. Even if Gandy replaces him, we still need a guard who can play BU. The guard could be the future Rg and Gandy the future C.

Rokkie Ed Johnson will help them out. A 6'2" 296 lb DT from Penn State. He had 63 tackels in the 2007 season & he was only a rookie. He shows good talant, heart, speed, & strength.

"Do you think any teams think Utetch and Fletcher are good enough to pay and compensate with a draft pick?"
Jim, when I wrote that, I was under the impression that the Colts would get compensated with a draft pick. Since they were both rookie FA's and weren't drafted, the Colts get squat. That's why I'm sure that Polian expected to lose at least one of them when he put the low tender on both of them. Third tender is about half a million more, but it would have gotten the Colts a 2nd round pick. I should have put this in your thread about TE need, but if he won't gamble half a mil against a 2nd round pick, he can't be too worried about the situation.
What about Jordy Nelson (K-State) with your 3rd round pick? He has the hands and size. Maybe he doesn't have long speed, but is able to get separation. Your thoughts?
> head, it looks like Bleedblu already answered your question much better than I could have. Like I said, I'm clueless about draft prospects and go strictly on draft reports and what the "experts" say, which means I'm still pretty much clueless. I've been doing a rethink on that though. The Colts already have a WR with speed, hands and size. Roy Hall. I wish he hadn't been injured last season when the Colts got so thin at WR. I would have liked to see what he could do.
The thing about Kenton Keith is, he spent 4 years in the CFL. I haven't watched it, but I've heard several people say it's a pass happy league. Wouldn't that mean that KK was not a 1st year back? I know the NFL is much better competetion, but the experience has got to count.
It would be great to have another speed rusher, but good DE's tend to get paid more than other D players. With Freeney and Mathis already making big salaries plus some decent backups on the team, is that where you'd like to see them use the cap space? Another thing to consider is that they only keep, I think 9 D-linemen on the final roster and they just signed Josh Thomas.
Now that the Colts have lost Scott, OL depth is looking more important.
totlbstrd, O-line depth is extremely important. Just imagine the injuries last season without Jake Scott. Fortunately, they can get good system players in the middle rounds, so they can be indulgent in the 2nd and 3rd.
Chukd, getting Ed Johnson as a rookie FA was the crime of the century. He played exceptionally well, and the Colts would have been hard pressed to replace Booger without him. Funny how that works. Polian brings in talent where we don't think it's needed, then it's needed. Like trading the 2008 1st round pick for Tony Ugoh, then Tarik retires.
How many of you are like me and quit sweating the salary cap with Bill Polian in charge?

Also, regarding Utecht, if he would have been given 3rd tender, I doubt seriously that the Bengals would have given up a 2nd rounder AND paid him. 3 mil a year for 3 years. That's insane!

I've been thinking more and more about D-line needs, and I just don't think it's as critical as it's being made out to be. Think about it. There were a ridiculous number of games lost to injury by the top 3 linemen, Freeney, Mathis, and Brock. You saw how much the Titans run D was affected when just Haynesworth was injured. When you lose your best 3 guys in various combinations, it's impossible to have enough backups ready to step in and take up the slack. You can only have 53 on the roster, and only a certain number of those slots can be taken up by D-linemen. Plus you have the cap considerations. If the Colts draft a guy who has a starter's ability, he's not going to be happy being a backup in a rotation. I do think they'll take one or two as a project, but they've got a couple of those on the roster now. You can take a D guy with the right physical attributes and attitude and make him a better defender, easier than you can make a skill guy on the offense better. And unless you're lucky enough to find a sleeper, those guys are taken in the earlier rounds.

Hey Speed respect the post and the differing view point. It is what makes these boards great. However, after further thinking it through this how I see it.....
On the other hand, whoever they draft with starting ability might not be happy because once their contract is up the Colts likely won't have the money to resign them any | |
