Mike Stoops stated that ASU was a JR College yesterday after 4 of his commitments fled that other school to come to the open arms of the rising Sun Devils. So the question is what exactly is mike stoops
I love how the city of Phoenix is up in arms over this. Now that I see that it made every single ASU fan irate I start to love the quote even more. Hey Byrnes, it was 3 recruits we lost and 2 signed. I will never get mad at a recruit when he tells our head coach that he is decommitting and going to asu because it will be easier for him to get into academically. That's a compliment to my University. I also don't get embarassed when our head coach says that after the recruits literally TOLD him to his face. At least Gerrell told him if they didn't win 8 games he wouldn't commit. Considering he went to Hamilton he probably would have been able to handle maintaining academically. Stoops apologized and stated that it wasn't taken out of context and it was dutifully reported, which it was, but his quote was left short. No one quoted the academics part. Oh, well, at least Erickson got the last word in: "It's about who wins games....I don't know what he's talking about, they're the ones who took junior college players." (ASU juco transfers require to have a 2.0, UofA requires a 3.0)
I'm not defending Mike Stoops, but I understand where he is going with this situation.
U of Arizona is superior academically to Arizona State. U of A has tougher academic restrictions, and they do not accept as many applicants. U of A is on Forbe's list of best value colleges in terms of education and cost. ASU is not on that list.
Back to the football perspective, Mike Stoops has no right in saying anything bad about the Sun Devils. The Wildcats have lost 3 straight to ASU, and it will be 4 straight this year. Until Arizona makes it to a bowl game or beats ASU, they have no right to bash the Devils.
Thanks for stopping by brent. If you still stand by Stoops' comments, well, are you feeling lonely? Everyone, in Tempe and Tucson alike, knows he was not only wrong, but dumb to say what he did. I wish he would shut up so he doesn't get fired.
Dbacksfan, did you go to ASU? You are wrong with your post. Both schools have the exact same admissions standards. The only difference is that ASU does not cap enrollment, so we get some leftovers that are the entire reason for our perceived inferior academics. Those lists vary every year, and different publications have very different points of view, so you can't put much stock into them. I haven't seen one of those lately, but in recent years we were always on those types of lists for academic values. Again, it doesn't really mean anything though.
I hate Stoops. he's a cry baby just because his school sucks. He wishes that he could be anywhere as good as erickson is someday. To bad that will never happen. haha
I wonder if the basketball team felt the "Stoops effect". The only one in a cat uniform who showed up to play was Bayless. I would love to see the football team bulletin board that first week of December. Keep sending us ammunition Stoops.
Saying ASU is inferior academically to u of a is a joke. I don't know what their out of state standards are but in state they are exactly the same. Not discounting dbacks stats about rankings, but I promise any kid that goes to high school in AZ that gets in to ASU would also get into U of A. Anyone applying to a job would have an equal footing with either u of a or ASU degree. I'm not saying ASU is a beacon of the academic community but u of a is certainly not Harvard. These are both state schools. They are going to be pretty equal academically.
The point is that mike stoops is a piece of crap. He calls out high school kids and then tries to back track by saying it was out of context. Regardless of the context he still resorted to insulting the kids. Nice move a hole.
One of the kids that Mike Stoops, a 40 something man, called out had a 3.0 and a 1400 on his SATs. That will get you in to a lot of schools.
University of Arizona Requirements for admission...
"Applicants must have an unweighted overall grade point average of 2.0 (A=4.0) in each subject area and may not have more than two deficiencies. Students may not have deficiencies in both math and laboratory science or in the same subject area."
You can look at the entire breakdown at the above link.
Arizona State University Requirements for Admission...
"Students must meet one of the following aptitude requirements:
3.0 GPA in competency courses (2.5 - 2.99 considered)
Top 25% (top 26-50% considered)
ACT 22 (24 nonresidents)*
SAT Reasoning 1040 (1110 nonresidents)*
*ASU does not require the writing portion of these tests. "
Again, the entire breakdown is at the above link.
The GPA is higher at Arizona State, but there are alternatives so I'm pretty sure you can say that they are relatively the same. These are for prospective freshmen.
The link is above the topic it refers to, I know not proper but eh. Looking at it I don't really see the 3.0 transfer student requirement. In essence the only difference is the enrollment cap that U of A applies.

Arizona Nation... I believe you have an inferiority complex. If there is a healthy rivialry with sports - fine, but when supposed educated people start trying to compare ASU and U of A academically, there is a huge problem.

The admission standards are quite similar for in state students -- however (this is to you undergrads and diploma holders) its not about getting in, its about learning something and graduation.

Back to my first point, why is AZ Nation; and particularly Stoops concerned about the academics at ASU? Stoops needs to be concerned about his football team, just as Erickson is about the Devils football, Sendeck about Basketball, and even Dr. M Crow is concerned about the overall university experience at ASU.

What happens in Tempe should have no effect on what is going on in Tucson... if the folks down there are doing THEIR jobs.

Get over yourselves, U of A is NOT the only show in the state... not by a longshot.

Now why praytell, would anyone care what Stoops said about their football program. He hasn't won a bowl game since Ohio State beat an SEC team so what qualifies him to be critical of anything (academics or athletics) about some other school. Speaking of JUCO's, did't he lose to Boise State Junior College? I also don't recall ASU having its quarterback on the payroll of a car lot.
On the positive side, can't wait for the Georgia-ASU game. Georgia fans are pumped for next season so we should have a good turnout for the game.
