The season was a disaster but somehow Brewster has pulled out a top 25 recruiting class.  Does this change your opinions of Brew since he backed up his recruiting talk with answers.  What prospects do you think will have the biggest impact next year? In their college career?

Too early for me to speculate with any sort of educated guess...my hope would be that one of the defensive linemen, Maresh at linebacker, or one of the defensive backs can step up and be a 'shut-down' guy of sorts.

I would have been alright with Brewster recruiting 31 defensive backs, but am glad to read that there is a positive feeling surrounding this year's class.

Yeah we tanked it quite good last year no question.

However we *all* knew that Brew needed at least 3 years into it before we can pass any judgement on him.

Now here we are on signing day and we have a recruiting class in the top 25.

When was the last time we could say that????

Not to mention Brew's other son the one that was going to sign at Texas hasn't totally committed to Texas yet.

Is we going to have a new saftey next year by the name of Brewster?

Considering the play last year, it'd have to be one of the better DB's signed that'd make the impact, if for no other reason than they may get earlier playing time.  Keanon Cooper or Traye Simmons being the big two.  I'd be more likely to go with the latter as from what I've seen, he has a knack for stripping the ball and forcing fumbles and is a good tackler.  And hopefully Maresh and the Gophers other pick-ups on the d-line and linebacking core will improve the pass rush.

I don't know how Brewster managed to get the number of top prospects to come to a last place team and to spend their Januarys in Minnesota, but my hat's off ot him.  Amazing work.

I agree with newfnshow.  Brewster will finally have some speed at the cornerback and safety positions.  Lack of speed is one of the things that really killed them this past year.  I'm excited about the receivers that signed too.  They're good complements to Eric Decker and should get a lot of playing time early on.  Adam Weber (or Marquies Gray) should have plenty of options next season.

Yeah,  it definitely gives me a little more faith than I had at the end of the season.  I was expecting a down year and all, but getting outclassed by the MAC and Bison had me wondering if all the progess coach Mason made in restoring some respectability to this program hadn't gotten flushed down the toilet.  This is definitely encouraging.  Sounds like we still had problems in-state, but we all know how hard he's worked on that aspect of recruiting.  There's reason to think he can get that turned around, especially with a little more success on the field (shouldn't be too tough after last season).

LB Sam Maresh, DB's Keynon Cooper and Traye Simmons, WR Brandon Green, Multi Purpose Player David Pittman, and when he gets his eligibility OL Matt Carufel should have the biggest and most immediate impact. The gem of the class still has to be the QB Gray. He is the perfect fit at QB in our new system. Now if only Tim Brewster can convince his othre son Nolan to not mess with Texas and anchor our secondary...

Yeah, seriously, can you imagine a QB running the spread with a cannon and a 4.48?  I don't think I'll mind those designed runs for the QB anymore.  That's faster than most of our running backs!

On D, I expect Maresh to fill in for Sherels and Cooper for Barber.

Congrats gophers. Great class coming in. This is how Zook started with Illinois. Maybe the future is looking up.

Just think of the talent brewster will bring in once the team starts winning again.  As far as the Gophers record last year, I think everyone needs to give Brewster a little slack.  He came in and tried to run his system with another coaches players.  If his players look lost in 2 years then we have the right to rip him, but I think he is going to do a great job once a few of his own players are ready.

I am thrilled to hear the Gophers have a top-25 class.  Just think what Brewster and Co. will have for a class after a decent season!

To the question about how Brewster recruited the talent, you have to think these kids see the opportunity to come in and start for a Big Ten team as freshman. These guys are very good recruits but may not see immediate playing time at schools like OSU and Michigan. They come to Minnesota and start as freshman, they have a couple great seasons, get to a couple bowl games and maybe they can get noticed by NFL scouts sooner.

They see Laurence Maroney and Marion Barber III playing prominent roles in the NFL too and that can't hurt.

Yeah, every kid loves to hear that they can get immediate playing time, but with the caliber of some of these players, they could get immediate playing time at just about any other school.  The fact that they go with the 1-11 team says something phenomenal about Brewster.

So Cradan, I don't know if you meant to take anything away from Coach Brewster, but certainly other people (especially those with a lower rated class who are jealous) will try to say that.  Honestly, it's a crappy argument.  You gotta give credit where it's due.  Brewster's one heck of a recruiter.

It's not just the playing time, I think that the new facilities opening up in '09 was something else Brewster pushed hard, I can't wait to see the team we field in two years... Go Gophers!

I'm not trying to diminish Brewster at all, I'm excited about the recruiting class and I think he did an incredible job. I would guess he may have used the same logic regarding playing time as a freshman, why not use it to your advantage. There is nothing better than seeing a guy recruited by traditional college football powers choose Minnesota. It's more than I would have expected. At the same time, I want to be realistic in my assesment, the competition for playing time won't be as intense with the Gophers. I can't wait to see these guys mature and hopefully compete with Ohio State and Michigan. Wisconsin and Illinois have shown that it can be done, you can compete with the big two, win a Big Ten title and go to the Rose Bowl.

I am impressed with Brewster's recruiting efforts. That clearly is his strength. I'm more concerned with the fact that he can actually be a good coach. That's my big question? I do think the new TCF Bank Stadium will really lift the program to Rose Bowl Heights. He got a top 25 recruiting class and they still have one more year at the Dome. When 2009 hits, that's when we turn the corner and get in the Big Ten's upper class again. This year, I'd be happy with 4-8 and at least one conference win.

we knew he could recruit but i am still skeptical about  the future until i see wins. its great to have a strong recruiting class with players that fit his system and it will help greatly in the years to come but if it doesnt translate into wins it doesnt matter. good start for brew and i hope he can get some wins under his belt cause you still have to coach the players and teach them the system. go gophers

One thing that Brew does is recruit, so I wasn't shocked that much when he pulled off a top 25 class. The Gophers have a lot of depth now and most should develop into some Big Ten Stars. I give him another year atleast before the Gophers start to climb up the Big Ten Standings.
