nobody mentions Johnny Winter. All of your lists are incomplete. And Carl Weathersby is a relatively unknown treasure.
Hard to judge these metal and hard rock guitarists cause I can't listen to them thru the shitty music.Who knows, they may be good.

Really depends on what you think is a great guitarist, if I'm thinking of an amazing guitarist I'm agreeing with one of the posts above me about Ywinge Malsteen and Steve Vai. Slash is a great guitar player, and definitely will go down as one of them. I think Slash is one of the greatest guitarists, but there are so many great guitarists that it's hard to classify. Another great guitarist in my opinion is Buckethead.

Anyway...good list. And good call about Django...keeping us in perspective.
weegdog -
To put Django in a better perspective, let me add this.
Django had a deformed hand and that hand was his "fingering" hand. He was only able to use 3 of his fingers on that hand. So you tell me - is there another guitarist who could even PLAY a guitar, let alone at the level Django could? There isn't ANY guitarist that can play at his level with FIVE fingers, let alone three.
How many of today's guitarists can play rock, blues, jazz and classical and play them all at the same level? Maybe one or two? Then ask: How many can do it with 3 fingers on their fingering hand? Answer: NONE.
I rest my case. Any arguement that Django isn't the best that ever lived or will ever play the guitar is invalid at best. The problem with people today (including all the magazines) is that they just don't consider anyone that hasn't played in the last 15 years or who isn't playing now. Another problem is that most (almost all) people who listen to rock, blues or jazz just don't take the time to listen to what came before the music they are listening to. Has anyone here ever listened to Chet Atkins? He is another guitarist that belongs in the Top 100 but he is known, primarily, for country music although he played blues, jazz and classical as well, and played them very well.
Nope - Django is GOD. All others are just plain mortals.

I forgot to add that people always listen to whatever music is popular at any given time. They listen to the sounds and the music but they fail to "listen" to the technique, the phrasing, the accomplishment of interpreting the music. All they hear is the "shredding", the runs, how loud the music is, can you dance to it (just thought I'd throw that in as a little humor), and how "sexy or in fashion the guitarist is.
I think it's a real shame that people don;t take the time to listen to older music and appreciate it - whether they like it or not. The human penchant to disregard anything considered old is a huge mistake - especially in music. I doubt any of the guitarists that have come along in the last 5 to 7 years have even heard of Django Reinhart ot Chet Atkins, for that matter. If they have, I doubt they have listened to him or "studied" his technique.
Ry Cooder said that "Django is my biggest influence and that no matter how long I live, I could only ever hope to be able to play in Django's shadow. Being his equal is an impossible dream. That's all anyone who plays the guitar seriously can ever hope for".

Although you really can't say that one is the "best," here are some really good players that are really up there in my opinion (and don't play metal):
Jeff Beck
John McLaughlin
Al DiMeola
Stanley Jordan

Slash is very good, but I don't think the best ever. This is a very hard question to answer. Some I'd rate over Slash - Clapton, Buckethead and Prince, who is very underrated as a quitarist in my opinion.
