I'm a diehard Huskie fan and there is no way anyone can tell me that Tenn. is better than our womens team 1st of all Maya Moore is the truth and Renee Montgomery is argueably the best point gaurd in the country. But when you look at our team from top to bottom we have only one weakness and thats ourselves.

Uconn is #1 because they haven't lost. But who have they beaten? Stanford and WV are good wins but the Vols have had a much tougher schedule. IMO, the Terps are clearly the top of the crop. Look at their schedule. Not just the teams they have played, but the grueling time frame. The Lady Terps have already played 5 games more than the Huskies and 6 games more than the Lady Vols. MD has wins over 6 ranked teams (more when they won). Uconn (2), Tenn (4).

GO COWGIRLS #20 and climbing!!!

If I had to pick between those two, I'd say Huskies for two reasons.

1) they are Big East, and I'm a Big East-o-phile.
2) I sympathize with teams that lose two starters, as a Pitt fan.

Actually, though, I think I'm cheering for the Terps like JD here. My girlfriend is in grad school there., and the story is great. Coach about to have twins, I understand they have some injuries too but can't find details, first win in College Park over Duke in forever.

So I'll steal a line...Go Lady Terps!

I am a Volunteer fan so I am hoping Tennessee wins it all again.

That said it is something to see so many really great women's teams across the nation and really great to see the old schools like Old Dom back in the top 20 this year. They use to win most of their game and had some of the earliest GREAT women's ball players. Needless to say I am very, very Old.

Back to what I was saying. The Vols are a very good program but the only thing that can hurt the Huskies this year are injuries. The Terps are special this year but get past Virginia this week and then we'll talk again remember Uconn pummeled them about amonth ago not only them but Old Dominion also so when you say we have not played anyone yet you should look at the remaing schedule first before you speak because North Carolina will get their 2nd loss against the Huskies very soon.

UConn for sure! Shut down Candace Parker and what do ya have... pretty much NOTHING! I think UConn is more talented all-around!

You must be crazy. The Lady Vols have alot more than just Candace Parker. The have Hornbuckle that just so happens is about to break the all time steals record. The have Nikki Anosike that is a dominate force inside. A pesty little point guard in Bobbit. For you to say they have nothing is crazy. They basically have the same team they won the national title with last year. Not to mention the greatest womens coach of all time.

It seems to me that it is the same story every year. Tennessee plays every top twenty five team, loses a road game in an incredibly hostile enviroment, and then is punished eternally for it. What people didn't read into the TN vs. Stanford game, is that the game started at 9pm pacific time. If they were in East TN (eastern time), the game would have started at midnight. Even the best teams are not good playing that incredibly late. The game ended about 2:30 in the morrning. Tell me the next time Uconn or any other east coast team braves those odds. Face it, Tennessee was willing to go to the #4 team and play in extreme basketball conditions that no other team would try. And it's not just this game, this year. This same thing happens every year. Tennessee gets punished for playing anybody, anywhere. We have the best player, the best coach, the best arena, the best fans, and the best tradition. Until they lose in the tourney, I don't see how you can pick against them.

 MTNMAN,

Your rationale is pretty good, but your math is lousy. You've shorted the Lady Vols just a little bit in their number of wins against ranked teams - but only by 50% (as of 1/17). So, yes, the Lady Terps have obviously had a "much rougher go of it" than anybody else.

With the great history both the Vols and the Huskies have it would be hard to miss with these two teams.
They have done a lot for Women's basket ball.
The idea of tough schedule vs not so tough has been going on a long time.
How hot can you be at the end seems to work different years with all kinds of schedules. And those schedules are worked out pretty far in advance, although not as much as college football.
Good luck to both.
Unless of course they are playing the Terps.

No one can argue that UT doesn't have the toughest schedule and MD currently has more Top 25 wins (but not the best %), but UCONN's schedule is far from light. You neglected to include wins vs. #10 Duke, by 26 points (for some reason not shown in CBS' schedule) and vs. #15 Old Dominion by 43! #3 UNC is tonight with 2 games against #5 Rutgers and games with #9 LSU, #17 ND, #22 Pitt and #23 Depaul on the slate. UCONN will end up playing 11 games against the current Top 25, MD 9 and UT 13. Of the 2 common opponents, Duke and Virginia, MD's margin of victory is 13.5 and UCONN's is 28. I wish UT and UCONN hadn’t ended their annual regular season showdown(s). I didn’t need to see 2 wars every year, but once would be great. Tonight's UNC game should be a good test, but until UCONN is beaten any argument that they aren't the best just doesn't hold water. We'll see how things end up in April, but it's fun to speculate in the mean time. Go HUSKIES! :)

My guess is that you will get to see 1 "war" . . . . the very last game of the season.

Let's hope it's so.

I do beg to differ with your stats. Don't know about Lady Terps, but Lady Vols are 8-1 vs. ranked teams. UConn's two wins vs ranked teams have both come at home (Stanford and UNC). Niether were blowouts. Lady Huskies did indeed look awesome vs UNC!!!
