You say Grothe is the most overrated player in football. That's fine - that's your opinion. But unless you back your opinion up with reasons and/or facts, it's worthless. Not trying to start a argument or anything but I'm curious what your reasons are for thinking he is overrated - I'd like to hear what you have to say.
My opinion is this:
Overrated by the media - hardly. He rarely gets mentioned unless of course you're talking about the commentary during a USF game. As far as sports shows go - I have hardly ever heard his name. During games however, yes commentators do sometimes praise him - but you have to give the kid his dues. He may be no Matt Ryan or Dennis Dixon but Grothe can break away from tackles like no one I've ever seen.
Overrated by fans - possibly. But you have to understand the fact that USF has been building a program and this is the first time we have had something true to get excited about and look forward to. Grothe is probably the best quarterback USF has seen - so yes, our fans love him. Sure we can probably do better, but I personally think Grothe is a good fit for our team, he just needs some improvement in the offseason with his decision making sometimes. If he can cut back on the interceptions, I think he can be great.
I have to agree. Outside of USF fans, I don't think he is hyped up much at all. Yes, he was on the Maxwell watch list last year, but I think 50 other guys were as well. He's done enough to get a little bit of attention outside of USF, but definately not a lot of hype.
You are also correct that he is hyped up by USF fans. People who haven't followed USF for a long time probably don't understand this, but compared to what he replaced, the guy is an All Star. No, I don't think he'll ever win the Heisman or be in contention to be the best QB in college football, but at least he can compete in 1-A. When you have a fan base that had to suffer through 3 years of Pat Julmiste, Grothe's going to get some accolades and attention. USF's love of Grothe has less to do with Grothe's strengths compared to Tebow, Brohm, Dixon, White, Ryan, etc. as it does Grothe's strengths compared to anyone (with the possible exception of Blackwell) we've had before.
Hey, lets keep in mind.....Grothe was only a SOPHOMORE!! He burst onto the national scene as a freshman. He has taken USF to the next level by his sophomore year. He will only get better. He is overrated? Please! Why?, because USF got crushed in the Sun Bowl? Grothe will never be overated in my and most likely my fellow Bulls minds.....all I need to think about is the dreaded QB name......Julmiste! Ugh! Grothe has added an electricity and leadership to this program and will only get stronger. Again, he has all this high profile experience as a soph. He will only get better!! Mark my words!
Alright, I hate USF. In fact, I hate most of the teams that now make up the Big East. But Grothe is not close to overrated. I think more was expected of him after his freshman year, and he certainly did struggle in the bowl game, but seeing as USF doesn't have many playmakers or consistent offensive threats beside himself, he really represents most if not all of that offense. That's a lot to ask a sophmore to do. Yeah, I know Tebow is only a sophmore as well, but put Grothe out on the field with Harvin and Caldwell and suddenly Grothe is going to look a lot better.
P.S. As a huge Oregon Duck fan, how was that Sun Bowl beat down you guys took back in December? Gotta feel good about your team when our 5th string quarterback throws for 4 touchdowns, free safeties are playing wide reciever, and a hurt JStew runs for a good 170000000 yards against your supposedly stout defense.
Hey Bottoms Up - I'd love to argue with you about the Sun Bowl, but unfortunately, I did watch the game, and yes, the Ducks did layeth the smackdown, especially in the second half. We've always had trouble with the straight north and south power runners, and you had a brilliant game plan, so you deserved the win.
Fortunately though, it was just one game, and we had a few good moments last year as well. USF continues to improve, and another good season this year will help erase the memory of the Sun Bowl loss. We've had some disappointments during our 12 year history of playing football, but the general trend is up. You may hate us, but you are going to keep watching us, because we will be a force on the national stage going forward.
BTW - I see you are a Patriots fan... congrats on your 19-0 season.... Oops, that's right, that damn Super Bowl lasted about 3 minutes too long....
I completely agree with you, South Florida is on the way up. While I do have a distinct dislike for that school, for them being such a young program and having made the strides they have...I only see them getting better.
I say this will be the defining year for Grothe he'll either make it or brake it this year since pretty much all of the stars on the defense have gone off to the draft, All the pressure will be on him.
Cant wait to see how he handles it.
