OK, Trojan fans, it is time to look forward ...

Let's discuss the two- or is it three-way competition for quarterback for football season 2008.

Sanchez was given the ball perhaps a dozen plays at the Rose Bowl, but was not allowed to throw, which made me mad! I guess once again he was sacrificed on the altar of Pete Carroll's "good guy" theory of not burying an opponent at the end of a game won long before the final seconds tick off.

Damn it, I wanted to see what Mark could do, even under these circumstances, since it has been a long time since he actually got a chance to throw (against Cal Bears, who incidentally have a fabulous new quarterback - yes, the one that blew their chance to beat us in the rain last season).

We keep hearing about Mitch Mustain and what an eye-popping QB he is. We hear less about Aaron Corp, but then again, he is a year behind Sanchez and Mustain.

I think it is a healthy thing to have these toe-to-toe position battles, which will include tailbacks, tight ends, receivers - all down the line.

Spring practice will find me THERE to see who can deliver - even in these less-than-desirable conditions.

FIGHT ON!

In the spring game, Mustain looked amazing.  Best QB I've seen in combined skills in the decade+ I've been affiliated with USC.  From what I've heard, he has spent the entire season this year leading the scout team against USC's 1st string defense, so that, combined with his 8 starts (all wins) at Arkansas puts him in a pretty good place to start competing for replacing Booty.

I'm pulling for Sanchez. To be honest whether he went 8-0 as a freshman or not, I really don't want to take leftovers from Arkansas- or the SEC for that matter, especially taking into consideration that his mom called Arkansas's coaches complaing that Mitch wasn't getting as many touches as Darren McFadden. Fact of the matter is Sanchez looked pretty solid considering his situation through 3 starts this year and who knows what he will become if you give Carroll and Sarky a whole offseason to mold him. He should be the next in a solid line of recent USC quarterbacks, because I believe someone will draft JDB and he deserves it. As for Aaron Corp, he seems like a stud as far as tools ar concerned and could be a star someday, however most of his skills seem to be in his ability to run the ball and at SC, opposite of recent trends around the country, we have never really needed a dual threat quarterback and I honestly don't ever seeing us go to a spread offense that has become popular. We've successfully run a pro-style offense that has banged out draft picks and piled up points, so there is no reason to stray from it. Just my thoughts- also in the RB position obviously McKnight is looking to be exciting but I'm really pumped about Stafon Johnson. He has looked very impressive and I can't wait until him and McKnight have developed- we might be in store for a return to the glory days of '05 with a Johnson/McKnight combination. What do ya'll think?

it doesnt matter to me which qb starts as long as they can play. whoever gives us the best chance to win should take the field. naturally i lean toward sanchez because i'm a socal guy and he has waited his turn. mustain, from what i hear is very, very good so it should make for a competitive spring with possible heartbreak in the fall.  more than the qb position, i really expect/hope that the WR's take the next step in becoming a USC great. that is what we lacked the most and in a throwing conference, it is vital that the receivers come to play every game. the drops, lack of confidence and indecisiveness can all be corrected this spring and in fall camp. p turner has the tools to be a 1st round pick. it's time he showed up on the field.

fight on

I think Mustain is on a mission because of how he left Arkansas.  He's got something to prove; he has that going for him where Sanchez and Corp don't.  I got to see nearly all of Mustain's games as a freshman at Arkansas; he was somewhat invisible on the field because of McFadden; however, he didn't an excellent job playing within his ability like much like Leinart did early in his first year; Mustain did not force throws, played mistake free, provided a spark to the offense when it was needed, played calm, and showed leadership even as a freshman.  When Sanchez played he tried to force some of his throws.  I do like Sanchez's arm strength, mobility, and leadership.  I haven't seen Corp play.

Side note:  I grew up in Illinois, went to USC, now live in Georgia.  For Christmas I travel to my parent's house which is 45 miles west from the Univ. of Illinois.  I was the first in my family to go to a university outside the state of Illinois.  For Christmas dinner there are 10 of us around the table and 6 went to U of I.  Eventually the Rose Bowl is brought up.  We argued back and forth for about 20 minutes then I predicted at the table "USC would win by about 6 touchdowns, 55-13".  That went over like a lead balloon.

Anyway, before Christmas I had to go into their local WalMart for something and I see a orange and blue Illini Rose Bowl tee shirt that says "BEAT USC".  So, I bought one along with a stencil set and a can of red and yellow paint.  I'm planning on stenciling the final score and "Fight On" and some other slogans.  Next year I'll wear it for Christmas dinner, or maybe I'll give it to my brother for his birthday.

Awesome man, I just don't care for Mustain very much, and didn't really care for him and his whiny mother while they were at Arkansas. I like Sanchez- he has a canon- and I think if Carroll and Sarky work with him til next August we will see an unbelievably improved quarterback, especially as far as decision making is concerned and that could be the spark we need to bring the title home to the Grand Old Lady, where it belongs. On a sidenote rpm818, we share a unique bond, you see I'm from Tampa, lived here pretty much my whole life besides Nashville where I was born and lived for a few months. Basically growing up in SEC country I think we take a different type of heat that many don't understand.

fightonsocal and rpm,

i feel the heat as well. i live in Big 12 country, specifically dallas texas. everything out here is burnt orange. i rep SC every chance i get.  while the got the best of us 2 years ago, most know which school is best. if they dont, i do my best to convince them.

i like both kids. mustain's mom could pose a problem but i think she'll be fine as the SC offense is more qb friendly than arky's wildhog and such. i have yet to see mustain perform since his freshman season. we start the season off with 2 big games and which ever qb starts needs to be ready to go.  mustain has faced SEC defenses and has won in the SEC, while sanchez faced oregon, notre dame and cal. not exactly fearsome. i have no doubts pete will make the right decision. either way we will have a quality backup.
