Briere did wonderful the first two series. Far better than Drury, and that is the guy everyone looked at when those two left Buffalo. The Pens have just done a great job keeping a body on him and muting him from the series. Prospal has just been absent period. As far as Lupul, who knows? He is a kid just getting his feet wet in the playoffs I guess.

Yeah, I've been watching the Red Wings too, and the only reason they've lost a game in this post-season is because Hasek is washed up.  And sorry to my Eastern Conference brothers, but the West is simply bigger, stronger and better right now.  And the Wings are the best in the biz.

The Pens are playing great team hockey right now, but I think they go into the series against the Wings as the underdog.  Can they win?  Absolutely!  But they're going to have to bring their "A" game almost every shift, let alone every game.

Not sure if the West is so dominant anymore, Crow. The Avs are reloading and pretty weak in net. The Stars are a mystery, but pretty good. The Sharks sank like a stone and could be a paper tiger. The Canucks have one fantastic line and the Ducks are solid, but we saw they flounder without the old guys that keep retiring and then returning. Soon they won't return anymore. The Flames and Wild are pretty solid.

Meanwhile the East has been drafting well and building some solid contenders. Just look in your back yard. Look at all the young studs being groomed in the East! Ovie, Geno, Richards, Crosby, Kovalchuk, Spezza, Bergeron. Not to mention about 6,000 Staals. The list keeps growing and the talent is thickening.

However, then you have the Red Wings. East or West no matter - those guys are just monsters.

Although I will say this - and tark I'm sure agrees - the Oilers will soon be very very scary. Give 'em a goalie, a great defenseman and just a tad longer to mature. They are some faaaaaaaast mammajammas.

I have watched the Red Wings some, not as much as you and they are scary good. I think that the Pens top 3 or 4 players are slighty better than Detroits top 3 or 4, but they definitely are deeper. I know that the Pens will be the underdog, but I think we can play with them. Each series I have heard how the team we were playing let down or didn't play well. At some point you have to look at it after three series and say maybe it is the Pens and not the other teams folding. I know Ottawa was not the same team, but I really think that the Rangers and Flyers are damn good and the Pens have just played better. The Pens were 8-1-1 against the West this year although they didn't play Detroit. The team that beat those west teams was nowhere as good as this team right now. The injuries plus our big trade at the deadline really changed this team. I think that Sid and Hossa are just starting to click together. Many didn't give the Flyers a chance against the Caps and the Habs and you guys are in the conference final. I respect the talent and depth of the Wings but I am too high on my team to not expect to win!

Hey, good luck Ben. I can't stand Detroit. I do respect how incredible they are, though. Maybe you guys can rally around being such underdogs that you'll stymie them early and they'll crack.

Yeah you're probably right, Red.  The gap between the east and west isn't that big if at all.  These things just go in cycles.  With all the young talent in the east, the tables might be reveresed in a year or two.  But the Wings are their own beast ... that is for sure.

I respect the talent and depth of the Wings but I am too high on my team to not expect to win!

Haha that's great.  I would love to share that kind of optimism, but I just can't ... not in my nature.  I've only been confident (or even cocky) about the Pens once ... in 1993 ... and that obviously didn't end too well.

There's a King of the Hill episode where Hank shows Bobby footage of him in high school when he tears his ACL dancing in the end zone after a touchdown.  He says something like ... "Senseless showboating, Bobby ... and God punished me."

That's pretty much how I am ... I keep everything on an even keel.  If the Pens win, then awesome!  But I don't get too excited until the final horn.  And if the Pens lose, then I don't get too down either.  Not sure if that is a blessing or a curse, but that's how I am.

Ha, I am not sure either but I am the opposite. I will be a real A-hole for a couple days if the Pens lose. I feel sick for a day or two and don't even go on sports sites when the Steelers lose a regular season game. I have just learned to live with the pirates or the stress would have killed me years ago.  I shouldn't care so much, but I guess the word fan is a derivative of fanatic! I am coaching my son's baseball team now and I am working hard to not care about the wins and losses there.  :)

Sure do! Remember when the East was dominant in hoops and hockey? Remember when the NL was incredibly deep and loaded with the best pitching? Remember when the AFC was that 'other league'? Wasn't all that long ago, really.

Actually, I think the AFC is starting to come down to the NFC's level again as well. I put it that way on purpose. I don't think the NFC is getting all that much better, I just think the AFC teams aren't quite what they were. The NL has done a good job of closing the gap as well, but the Sox are still titans with the Angels not far behind.

Not so much in basketball. The West has quite a few great teams
