Until this team does something? Like a go to a bowl game? Or to develop an on-campus stadium (which has been suggested by Athletics dept. people at times) this way students stop being lazy and CARING about the damn sports team?
I feel like I'm one of like 10 Tulane fans on this planet. I almost want to pick up a Big 12 team or something.
Anyone out there have predictions/ideas for the future?
Don't worry. I'm here. You're not alone.
The problem with Tulane is that no one listens to the Athletics department anymore. They used to, when we were in the SEC (SEC champs 1934!!!) And its not like we haven't done anything since then (undefeated in 1998, Shaun King sets record for highest season QB rating that year, Liberty Bowl champs 2002). We just need to recruit more Matt Forte's. And what happen to all the wonderful QB's we had? Shaun King, JP Losman, and I know there was more( at one point we had three starting QB's in the NFL. The good news is that it was Coach Toledo's first season, so we get to see how well he can recruit.
Tulane needs time. An on-campus stadium is needed desperately. The controlled atmosphere takes out all the fun of a game. Sure, we have LSU in the same state. But the good players that do not get scholarships to LSU in football can come to Tulane instead. Like I said before, Tulane needs time.
This team won't be any good for another 2 years, and there's a caveat. There cannot be any natural disasters, Toledo has to stick around, the school must fire Scott Cowen, and the city has to get better.
All that being said, the students will start caring once these things happen and they start to win plain and simple. They go hand in hand, but there are some good things on the horizon.
First, they have watchable opponents still (LSU, Texas, TCU, Houston)
Second, they still have notable talent in the NFL.
Toledo appears to be on the right track. I have no problem with Cowan, but do not know as much about the program now that I live in MIA. I think Tulane needs to focus on playing up the quality of the education as well as the location. If Mack Brown, and Bowden could do well, I think Toledo will do quite well also.
We are here, we are here, WE ARE HERE! (Tulane football fans are like the Who's of Whooville.) My solution to our predicament: form a conference of academically oriented universities of the South/ Border States. Here is my dream conference:
Tulane
Rice
Vanderbilt
Navy
Duke
Baylor
Of course, if they would deign to field a team we'd be pleased to invite:
Washington University
Emory University
Georgetown University
Such a conference would be exciting and competitive. It would also attract athletes who would wish to compete at the national level and who, as well, bear in mind the likelihood of playing the sport professionally. Perhaps those who earn a letter might be entitled to scholarships for graduate study at any conference member school.
