Extra Hustle -- Paul Pierce Shuts It Down

For the casual observer of Friday night's Game 6 of the Celtics-Hawks series, they would have a hard time telling which was the veteran team with a 66-win regular season and which team reached the playoffs with a meager .451 winning percentage.  This was most apparent during the 4th quarter of the Hawks' 103-100 win.

Although the momentum was clearly with the Hawks, Celtics forward Paul Pierce fouling out with significant minutes left on the clock in the fourth quarter marked the "end" of the game for his team.  His sixth foul was a flukey call as he wrestled for position under the basket with Zaza Pachulia, but Pierce's response was the story of Game 6.

Rather than mentally stay in the game and continue to be a leader from the bench, he draped his head in a towel and sulked while looking like he knew the Celtics were going to lose.  When Doc Rivers called time outs in the final minutes of the game, where was Pierce?  At the end of the bench not listening to the coach or providing any support to his struggling team.  Unless there's a compelling reason for Pierce just quitting on his teammates like that, I hope Rivers or Kevin Garnett or Ray Allen gave him the business after the game.

I'm not a Celtics or Hawks fan, but Pierce's actions were bush-league and inexcusable.  Now, what do I think that means for Game 7?  Pierce probably knows he shut it down near the end of Game 6 and he probably can't wait to get back on the floor because he has something to prove.  I can't argue with his skills and obviously this has been his team for the past few years, but if Pierce really wants to win a Championship, then he can take lessons from the new leaders of this team: Garnett and Allen.

Extra Hustle -- Paul Pierce Shuts It Down

While I'm not sure being a cheerleader was going to help the C's win that game, I agree with you that Paul Pierce's sulking was not appropriate behavior  nor was  getting a technical foul after he fouled out.  Granted, three of his "fouls" were pretty questionable but he's 30 years old, a veteran and the captain.  People mention Pierce as a possible hall of famer and stunts like this don't help his cause.  You may also remember him elbowing Jamal Tinsley against Indy a few years back and then wrapping his head like he had a toothache . . .looked like a halloween costume.  The rest of team needs to play better as well . . the intensity is lacking and they appear to be playing scared.  I'm pulled for them in game 7 but so far I'm disappointed in them.

Good points, muddle.  I agree that a cheerleader wouldn't provide much help, but due to Pierce's leadership role on the team, certain players are bound to look to him for support.  If your most-veteran guy sits on the end of the bench during time-outs and is looking like his team has no chance to win, then that has to have some effect on a teammate's mental game.  Pierce didn't do his team any favors and we can only wonder what would have happened if he kept his head in the game.

Extra Hustle -- Paul Pierce Shuts It Down

What's up, Governor!! Let me just say that the Celtics are going to get shutdown quicker than the Neverland Ranch. They are a great team and all but struggling to the only sub-500 team in the playoffs is not good signs for them. Not saying they will not make the finals, but as we know the playoffs are a different ball game and regular season records against teams have little bearing here. Still hoping for a Lakers/Celtics final though just for old-times sake!

Aussie, I couldn't agree more....about wanting the Lakers-Celtics final.

As for their chances of continuing past the second round, not surprisingly Garnett and company came out in Game 7 yesterday very angry and were not going to be beat.  I think they have the team that can make it through the East, but Lebron will give them match-up problems...then again, he does that against every team.  However, I don't see Lebron carrying his team (like always) past the Celtics.

Now, believe or not, the Celtics are probably hoping to face the Pistons, not the Magic in the Conference Finals; Boston won the season series against Detroit 2-1, but lost both games against Orlando.

The fact that Paul Pierce was not being a cheerleader is fine. Although, to me it demonstrates that Pierce is more selfish than anything else. Think about it, you are in the playoffs, you are the team leader (at least you have been the only leader for the past couple of seasons), and you foul out of a close game with minutes left. Most likely, you would all respond like I would, which is to mentally be so fired up that you would be standing up and rooting your team on in hopes that you could close the series. Now in response to not even getting your butt off of the bench during a time out... are you kidding me! Are we back in Kindergarten? I don't care how old you are or how much money you make. That move does not only make you look like a complete self centered player that everyone should love to hate (at least at the moment) but it is also disrespectful to your teammates, your coach, and the many people who tuned in and showed up to watch you play (not to mention the kids who idolize you). I would have liked nothing better than to see K.G. take his 10 ft. long arms and slap some sense into Paul Pierce's swollen head.

That being said, I think the Celtics will win the East.
