Giants Preview

Posted on: February 11, 2008 11:28 pm

Here is the first in a series of previews of teams for the upcoming season:

San Francisco Giants
Last Year: 71-91 5th in NL West

Lineup:
They acquired Aaron Rownand in the offseason and by doing so they cemented Rowand as the only position player on the team worth a starting spot.  He will be expected to put up similar numbers to those he put up being surrounded by Utley, Howard, and Rollins surrounded by Bengie Molina and Rich Aurilla.  This will easily be one of the worst lineups in the league.

Projected Lineup:
RF Randy Winn
LF Dave Roberts
CF Aaron Rowand
C Bengie Molina
1B Rich Aurilla
2B Ray Durham
3B Kevin Fransden
SS Omar Vizquel
P Barry Zito

Pitching Staff:
They have a very respectable pitching staff that has a lot of promise with Cain, Lincecum, and others.  The problem is that even though they are in a pitcher's park they will have to shut down the opponent to win games 3-2.  They also have a very weak bullpen with no established closer.

Projected Rotation:
Barry Zito
Matt Cain
Tim Lincecum
Noah Lowry
Jonathan Sanchez
Closer: Brian Wilson

Farm System:
They have promising pitching prospects especially Linececum and Sanchez but seem to lack a number of position players which is a greater need for them.
Prospect who might help the most this year after starting the season in the minors:
Nate Schierholtz OF
