2009 Tournament

I'm a Umass fan. I'm biased, but I think they deserve to be on here as a possible. Last year, they had a tourney shot before losing ugly in the A-10 tourney. This year, closer than last year, but same result. They became a little more of a Travis Ford type team, with a lot of running up and down the floor and scoring A LOT of points (most ever not by 'Cuse in the Carrier dome. 107). This year, they are stepping up in the NIT, coming back from 22 to beat Syracuse in Syracuse, the first team to beat the Cuse twice in a season at the Dome, and the only team Boeheim has played multiple times without beating.

Chris Lowe was huge in the Akron win, and Ricky Harris was huge in the Syracuse win. Both of these guys will be back to lead the team next year. Guards are the centerpeice of Ford's up-tempo philosophy. These two will be pivotal pieces of next year's team, and should take them pretty far. Lowe is incredible off the dribble and Ricky Harris is money from three as well as being a passer. Alongside them in the backcourt is Anthony Gurley. In case you forgot, he was the top recruit in the country two years ago, and committed to Wake Forest. He played for his freshman year, getting 6.4 ppg in 14 mpg. He will be a terrific 6-3 scorer and fits the style of play perfectly.

At the 4 will be Tony Gaffney. He's a gritty defender who shut down Akron's star before getting injured. I think it was #11's fault (Akron). Hes a jerk. Anyways, he'll be effective once again next year when Umass needs a decent inside presence.

Sharing the 5 spot will be Papa Lo and Luke Bonner. Bonner is huge. He's a decent shooter with a less than impressive inside game. Lo is a defensive presence who disturbs opponents' rythms when hes in the game. As ford gets more confidence in him, he will get more minutes and become a factor.

Off the bench sophomores (next year) Correia and Glass will see a good amount of minutes. Umass will go small often with them.

Umass will be in better shape than their opponent and they will run all game to win. With their great guard play, Umass will get at least a 3 seed in the A 10 tourney and could make the NCAAs.
