Should the Gasol trade be vetoed?

Posted on: February 20, 2008 12:13 pm

Let me start by saying that the Lakers got a great deal. But, I think the media is overemphasizing how bad the deal was for Memphis. I don't think this deal rises to the point where a committee should be appointed to veto trades like this. Several coaches/GM's around the league are advocating such a committee.

Memphis wanted to free up cap space to rebuild. There are few, if any, expiring contracts for horrible players as large as Kwame Brown's. That frees up a ton of space and allows Memphis to pursue free agents (whether they land any is another ?).

Memphis also got Crittenton who was a 1st round pick with some potential.

They also get 2 1st round picks in 2008 and 2010 to help the rebuilding process.

Plus, Memphis really believes Pau's brother, Marc Gasol will be good. The guy was MVP of the Spanish League.  I doubt he will be as good as Pau, but he might be a serviceable NBA player.

Combine the cap space, draft picks, young PG, and overseas project with potential and I think Memphis got some value in return.  Again, they got the worst end of the deal. But, I don't think its so bad that committee's should be established to veto trades like this.

What are your thoughts?

Should the Gasol trade be vetoed?

Actually brother Marc is the key here.  As I understand it he is only 21.  At that age and being the same height as Pau he could make this trade look lopsided the other way.  Thats the funny thing about trades.  For the most part you are rolling the die and hoping it beats standing pat.

Should the Gasol trade be vetoed?

While this was a bad trade for Memphis - I'd be against any committee. Who would sit on this committee - strikes me as being open to a lot of abuse. The thought that the league (David Stern) would be micro managing deals is not a pleasant one. Sounds like a glorified conservatorship for incompetent owners. Plus - Arlen (am I famous yet) Specter would likely get wind of it and want video tapes of the committee proceedings.

Should the Gasol trade be vetoed?

The lakers got a really good player but memphis did get a hell of a lot in return for that one player. I think that if memphis actually uses the picks they got for him and turn them ito a couple of serviceable players then they could turn the tide of their team.

Should the Gasol trade be vetoed?

Actually this trade was horrible for Memphis for two reasons, A) they just draft Mike Conely jr 4th overall and Critterton will have to play behind him and B) the two first rounders will be late first rounders probably...We all know any players outside of the top 15 are usually going to the D-league! Okay if this Marc Gasol guy ends up being a special player then maybe it was fair. However Gasol is already one of the premiere centers in the nba and a top 20 player overall.

Maybe something should be set in place, who knows!
