Movie Talk

Who says this has to be all about sports?...

One of my favorite things to do in my spare time is to watch movies.  Since I don't have the time, or the funds to get to the cinema as much as I would like, I rely on NetFlix and the movie channels to see relatively new releases.  You won't see any "Horton Hears a Who" talk here for another 6-8 months or so...

In this, I also include HBO and Showtime's original programming...  Dexter, The Soprano's, The Tudors, In Treatment, Dead Like Me, etc.  HBO also has great Mini Series Events.  They won a ton of Emmys for "Bury My Heart ay Wounded Knee" (which was fantastic) and have recently begun airing a Tom Hanks produced take on the David McCullough book "John Adams".

I've watched the first two installments of "John Adams" and can't wait for the rest of the series to play itself out.  Paul Giamatti is surprisingly good as our Massachusetts born second President.  He is just unlikeable enough to portray a man whom many of his contemporaries found less than charming.  David Morse shows promise as George Washington, as Washington is typically overplayed and diafied, but Morse keeps him understated and stoic... It's great to watch him work.

On Sunday night I was able to watch "Disturbia" for the first time.  While it lacks the artistry of Hitchcock's "Rear Window", it was an adequate modern retelling.  Shia LaBeouf showed why he is one of the premier up-and-coming actors in Hollywood, and the a-for-mentioned David Morse was fantastic as the "psycho next door".  The real stand out in this movie for it's target audience though was newcomer Sarah Roemer.  This movie is aimed at the 18-35 male demographic, and the body shots of Ms. Roemer throughout the movie certainly keep the viewer's attention, even if her character was considerably less complex than the director tried to make her.  When she was given a chance to actually act, she did well enough to warrent more complex roles, but most of the time she was treated merely as eye candy and a tool to distract the viewer from the actual plot.  In all, the movie provided good entertainment, and was pleasing to the eye.  It's worth a watch if you want easy entertainment with a touch of suspense.

Next installment: Ratatouille

"John Adams" has been great, so far. Paul Giamatti is one of the better actors around, despite some bad movie choices. His roles in Saving Private Ryan and especially Cinderrella Man, pretty much made those movies for me. Well seeing Vin Diesel get shot, over and over again by a sniper in Saving Private Ryan, was pretty great too. Man I hate Vin Diesel.

I like this blog idea.

I think I will check in often.

I agree with you about not going to the movies. My issue isn't really the lack of funds as it is I refuse to pay $15 per ticket, when I can wait 2 months and buy the movie. That way I don't have to deal with the moron at the movies either. The 15 year old couple using the theater to make out, The people who brought there 2 year old to the movies, that is going to cry the whole time. The large lady who need to hit the rest room every 15 minutes. The lady who can't follow the movie and has to have her husband explain the whole thing. The 2 chicks who gab about there shopping adventure before they got there. The black family (no offense) that yell at the actors on the screen. The 3 geeks who either complain the whole time about the inaccuarcies of the movie (I wait till after  but I am one of these geeks) or spout out what is about to happen.

Only 3 things get me to the movie theater. It has to be a really big movie, that I MUST see on a big screen for me to go to movies (last one being "at worlds end", Next will probably be Indian Jones). It is part of a "date night" for the wife and I (I think we are going to see "Leather Heads" soon). Or it is a kiddy movie that I take my niece to (This might be "Horton Hears a Who). Because who cares about those. I expect kids to be running around and acting like a fools. Can't get upset by that. It would be like going to the park, and getting mad because kids were playing.

Anyway

Took my 4 year old niece to see Ratatouille when it first cam out. I was really entertained by that movie. You will like it. It is funny and has a pretty good story to it. Plus it had my niece saying "don't just HORK if down!". Which cracked me up for weeks after.

So enjoy

Thank you Jedi.  I agree whole heartedly with your assesment of the movie theater experience.  Blockbusters, like The Lord of the Rings Trilogy (which wasn't a trilogy at all, rather one very long movie broken down into three parts) and the Harry Potter movies can get me in the seats since they are a true movie going experience.

I'll do my best to keep this a regular feature... I had a lot of fun writing the first one!
